RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT The appointee will be expected to spend one day per week in the Department of Chemical Pathology at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. This will provide an opportunity to participate in research and continuing professional development. The Oxford department is involved in many research projects and has links with many other departments within the Oxford University Hospitals Trust and the University of Oxford. It is committed to research and will support the appointee in furthering their research interests.

Oxford has a strong track record in obtaining research grants and both local and national monies may be available for suitable research. TEACHING The appointee if suitably qualified would be invited to help teach on the Laboratory Medicine course for first year clinical students of the University of Oxford (see above) and for clinical students from the University of Bristol Medical School attending the GWH Academy on the 3rd year pathology module in Swindon. They will also be expected to help with training of specialist trainees, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists. The department at the Great Western Hospital is approved for training of biomedical scientists and the department in Oxford is approved for training of biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and medical trainees in Clinical Biochemistry.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES All consultants in pathology are accountable through the Clinical Lead for Pathology Services to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Division. Consultants are key members of the Divisional team and are accountable and responsible for leading changes to service that will improve the patient experience. To support the Clinical Lead for Pathology Services in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Pathology Management Team. This will include clinical leadership in Biochemistry laboratory meetings, active participation in monthly Pathology meetings and developing a close working partnership with the Blood Sciences Manager To contribute to the leadership and development of clinical and laboratory Chemical Pathology under the direction of the Clinical Lead for Pathology Services and Associate Medical Director, in line with the Divisions and Trusts business plans.

he post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives. Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust. As part of the Divisional Management Team, assist in the cost-effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non-pay items such as equipment and drugs, within budgets. Work within the Trusts framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures.

The post holder will be expected to reach out to users outside the Trust to foster good relationships and ensure that Chemical Pathology is meeting the needs of its users, clients and patients. Further details can be found on the attached Job Description
