**Job description**:
Within UK Maritime Services, the UK Technical Services - Ship Standards teams have responsibility for developing, and maintaining, UK policies and regulations relating to a wide range of safety and environmental issues associated with vessels and ships of all sizes (from small pleasure vessels to the largest internationally trading ships).

This provides a dynamic working environment with regular engagement with operational colleagues in other areas of the MCA, other Government Departments, and other national Maritime Administrations, as well as industry stakeholders.

As the Vessel Policy Advisor, it will be your responsibility to provide administrative support and contribute to developing and delivering UK policy, regulations, and guidance in line with MCA & UK government objectives for a safe, environmentally sound, and commercially successful UK fleet.

This is an exciting time to join the MCA. You will have the opportunity to engage in a challenging but rewarding environment, to improve safety in a high-risk industry. You will be working with a variety of stakeholders providing you with exposure to a range of grades across government and to interact with members of the industry.

This role will be based in the Southampton HQ. MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work. Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.

**Your responsibilities include but are not limited to**:

- To manage the administrative preparation for Stakeholder meetings and correspondence with Stakeholder Groups and represent MCA at such meetings as well as other meetings, working groups, project groups and external events as required in support of key responsibilities and the work of Stakeholder Groups.
- To support the development of regulations and Codes of Practice to implement UK policy for shipping safety, working with lawyers, economists, policy leads, Industry and surveyors to assist in the preparation of instructions for Government lawyers, impact assessments and Marine Notices for timely implementation of mandatory requirements.

**About you**:
To be successful in this role, you will have a good command of English writing skills to allow the drafting of guidance, instructional or advice documents.

A strength of yours will be your ability to communication effectively, verbally and in writing to allow the development of good working relationships with internal external stakeholders. You can communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. In addition, you can deliver information in a clear, confident, and professional manner.

You will have excellent IT skills and a demonstrable knowledge in the use of Microsoft packages, in particular Microsoft Excel and Word.
