Bereavement Supervisor

King's College Hospital are looking for a Bereavement Services Supervisor to work in the Mortuary and Bereavement department based at our Denmark Hill site.
The postholder will provide a professional, proactive and sensitive service to bereaved relatives, whilst ensuring the Trust's statutory obligations are fulfilled. You will be responsible for the running of the Bereavement office ensuring high quality and responsive service, meeting both regulatory and accreditation requirements specifically HTA and UKAS.
We are looking for an individual that has experience in this field and can provide leadership and management of the Bereavement officers. You will also be keen to learn and play a vital role in developing and improving the service we provide to colleagues and to the bereaved, supporting the Assistant Service Manager to implement these.
The role of Bereavement Services Supervisor Officer is interesting and varied. Working in a busy unpredictable environment, you will require excellent customer service, communication and organisational skills and be computer literate.
You must be able to work independently and as part of a team. You will work closely with relatives of deceased patients, a wide range of healthcare professionals and external stakeholders. You must be able to respond appropriately and sensitively to a diverse group at a difficult time in their lives and be capable of working with competing demands in a calm and professional manner. You will be able to deliver information in a clear and precise way.
To work closely with other key professionals both within and outside the Trust in order to meet individual needs. To promote an awareness of bereavement issue within a multi faith, multi-cultural environment. You will work in parallel with the Medical Examiner’s Office and work alongside the Medical Examiners Officers and Medical Examiner to provide a service. To take part in the work of the Bereavement Hub.

Key Responsibilities
To provide expertise, knowledge, support and education for the care of deceased patients and their relatives.
To be responsible for the daily running and allocation of deaths.
To be responsible for providing an efficient and sympathetic service to bereaved relatives. To provide information on local services, hospital support, e.g memorial services, chaplaincy and palliative care across sites.
To support the Assistant Service Manager in developing the service to ensure that it is proactive and responsive in liaison with multidisciplinary team and the community, including Registrars of births and deaths, and Lambeth and Southwark Social Services.
To maintain a safe environment for staff and users of the service and be able to diffuse any hostile or aggressive behaviour in a calm and professional manner. At times of immense distress, such as that of anticipatory or acute grief, demonstrate advanced empathic, interpersonal and communication skills, in caring for relatives.
To provide information about how to register the death, particularly with families who are no local, and assist with booking appointments when necessary.
To administer and issue property of deceased patients in accordance with the Trust Patient property procedure.
When the deceased patient has no next of kin or relatives are unable to make funeral arrangements, to liaise with the appropriate Council to arrange for a house search to take place or to take part in a house search. Systematically ensure that all avenues for contacting relatives have been explored, and when appropriate, contact potential relatives/friends.
