SUMMARY OF ROLE

The hours will be two day per week 8.30am
- 14.30pm.

As our Practice Phlebotomist you will:

- Use technical equipment to safely draw blood from patients
- Explain the process of drawing blood clearly to a patient
- Reassure patients who might be nervous or scared of the procedure
- Send blood samples to testing laboratories
- Keep track of blood samples and results that are returned after testing
- Update patient records
- Maintain an organised and clean work area based on health and safety regulations and the guidelines of the medical institution
- Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offering additional resources on the collection process, if the patient requests them

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Assist the practice nurse(s) / medical team in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care, ensuring that the patient safety and wellbeing is respect at all times.

- Communicate courteously and effectively with patients, relatives and carers.
- Order equipment, vaccines, consumables and other medical supplies as directed by the practices nurse(s), Practice Manager, or partners.
- Carry out health assessments on patients i.e. testing urine, blood pressure checks, height, weight and taking simple medical history.
- Perform phlebotomy as requested by the medical team.
- Fully document all patient interaction in the patient’s electronic medical record.
- Report all matters pertaining to patient’s care - changes in condition/circumstances to the relevant member of the medical team as matter or priority and ensure that a record is kept in the patient’s electronic medical record.
- At all times act with regard to the confidentiality and sensitivity of issues to do with patients, their care and treatment.
- Greet patients, their relatives and cares bilingually and in a friendly and courteous manner at all times ensuring that the practice’s Welsh language policy and the wishes of the Welsh

Language Commissioner are adhered to.
- Assist in audit as required.
- Have knowledge of and act at all times within the boundaries of health and safety and data protection.
- Assist in the recall of patients for chronic disease clinics.
- Comply with practice protocols, policies and guidelines.

COMPETENCE

You are responsible for limiting your actions to those which you feel competent to undertake. If you have any doubts about your competence during the course of your duties you should immediate speak to a member the practice nurse(s).

RISK MANAGEMENT

It is a standard element of the role and responsibilities of all practice staff that they fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards.

RECORDS MANAGEMENT

As an employee of the practice, you are legally responsible for all records that you gather, create of use as part of your work within the practice (including patient health, financial, personal and administrative), whether paper or computer based. All such records are considered public records and you have a legal duty of confidence to service users (even after the employee has left the practice). You should consult the Practice Manage and practice nurse(s) as to the correct management of records with which you work.

EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENTAL
- Use of PC on a daily basis requiring a high level of concentration for speed and accuracy
- Receive highly sensitive and confidential information from patients and practice staff
- Post requires main proportion of time sitting, but some degree of standing and walking

- In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately
