Canterbury, United Kingdom Canterbury Cathedral Full time

Canterbury Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the place of pilgrimage and the stories of the Canterbury Saints, a national focus and of the global Anglican community as well as continuing to be a vibrant place of Christian hospitality, worship and witness.

We have recently successfully completed our £34.5 million capital and activity project entitled the Canterbury Journey which was supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and many donors. The impacts of both COVID and BREXIT are keenly felt in terms of reduced footfall and income (more than 25% down).

This time also coincides with the appointment of a new Dean of Canterbury - The Very Reverend Dr David Monteith who leads the work of the Cathedral with the Chapter and in due course will seek to articulate a new strategy for the coming years.

We realise that the fundraising context has changed greatly over recent years. A building and community like ours will always require development capital projects as well as secure revenue income from fundraising, commercial and other activities.

To ensure that our services comply with external and internal best practice, policy and regulations we are seeking a Fundraising Consultant who will efficiently and effectively audit and review our fundraising as a whole to celebrate strengths, identify weaknesses and to make proposals for any changes required to create the best possible situation in which we can be successful at fundraising in the coming 5 years.

The successful applicant:

- Will be confident in written and oral presentations
- Will have demonstrated capability in audit and review of fundraising
- Will have demonstrated strong team working skills
- Will understand the ethos of the Church of England and Cathedrals and ideally will have experience of working in this sector

From the Fundraising Consultant, we expect good engagement with both people and place, recognising that some research and conversations can take place remotely and by zoom. We will also expect some of this work to take place on site directly with people to illuminate the Canterbury and East Kent context.

By 16th June 2023, the Fundraising Consultant will produce a clear, yet concise, report which describes the findings and sets out any recommendations for further consideration with indicative prioritisation of any such matters. The Chapter will require the Fundraising Consultant to present the findings of their Report to them in person at their meeting on 30th June 2023.
