An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Tavistock Day Case Surgical unit / Outpatient department as a Band 3 HCA for 30 hours per week

Tavistock Hospital is a busy community hospital has a 15 bedded Medical ward, theatres suite, Minor Injury Unit and Physiotherapy Department. The theatre suite / Outpatients operates Monday to Friday providing surgical day case procedures in a number of specialities. The Outpatient department facilitates medical and surgical clinics and operates over 2 sites Tavistock Hospital and Tavistock Clinic.

The team are looking for a motivated, organized individual to join our friendly team. To ensure that patients are admitted, treated and discharged in a timely and efficient manner, making the process as smooth as possible for patients. This is an exciting time to join a growing department.

**Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification**

The Health Care Assistant is able to work as part of the Surgical Suite and Out Patient department under the direction of the Nurse/ODP assisting in the provision of a high standard of nursing care, advice and information to patients, relatives and carers. They will participate in clinical areas and processes appropriate to their level of knowledge, experience and skills.

The HCA works as part of the Surgical Suite / Out Patient team under the supervision of registered nurses and ODP’s:
- Participates in the delivery of patient care
- Contributes towards ward/department organisation
- Supports registered nurses in the provision of a safe and caring environmen

The HCA demonstrates a level of skill and understanding which enables them to undertake specific tasks delegated by the nurse in charge and in accordance with relevant procedures, guidelines and policies. S/he will undertake both routine and specially identified tasks for which they have been trained and assessed as competent

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
1. Work co-operatively as part of the multi-disciplinary team, helping nursing, and other clinical staff in routine work associated with patient care

Support qualified nurses in the implementation of programmes of care within the limits of the HCA knowledge and competence

Carry out clinical procedures as required and under supervision, e.g. removal of intravenous cannula, wound dressings

Provide comfort, reassurance and support to patients and/or their carers if anxious or distressed

Assist with essential patient care, e.g. making beds, sorting clean linen, etc

Undertake the role of surgical runner for Scrub Nurse

Ensure adequate hydration and nutritional intake for patients post operatively.

Assist patients to access and use appropriate toilet facilities, ensuring privacy and dignity are maintained

Record routine observations as designated by the nurse in charge (following training and having been assessed as competent, e.g. TPR & BP, urine tests, ECG, blood glucose monitoring)

Alert trained staff promptly of changes in the patient’s condition or any possible risks

Prepare, supply and maintain all necessary instrumentation and equipment for the theatre list and outpatient clinics
1. 2.Understand own level of responsibility and accountability in relation to registered nurses

Identify own learning needs and produce a personal development plan in conjunction with the ward sister/charge nurse

Reflect on and analyse workplace experiences in order to develop own skills/abilities

Assist with the induction and on-going development of Band 2 HCA and other support staff, acting as a role model

Attend organisation orientation programmes, mandatory training sessions and annual updates

Take part in reflection and appropriate learning from practice, in order to maintain and develop competence and performance

To assist with the induction programme of new staff demonstrating level of duties, clinical skills and procedures as appropriate

Ensure proficiency with all equipment prior to use in accordance with local policy

Participate in the WHO Surgical Safety checklist and procedure

To participate in appraisal and personal development planning

To assist with the maintenance of budgetary control within the Theatre and Outpatient Department by making effective and efficient use of resources at all times
