A Youth Justice Officer is required to supervise young people on court orders and work with complex families in accordance with statutory obligations, National Standards. The aim of this supervision it to reduce their rates of re-offending, and thus improve their future prospects, and increase the safety of the residents of Waltham Forest. The post holder will be part of the inter-disciplinary Youth Offending Service that provides community and through care services to young people who progress through the Criminal Justice process.

Key Responsibilities:

- Work with high-risk individuals and groups of young people and their families on designated projects.
- Produce a range of written reports with deadlines and to attend Court as required, providing timely and high quality reports to the court and to Referral Order Panels.
- Undertake assessments of young people including high-risk offenders, utilising standard assessment tools.
- Liaise with other departments' services and agencies to further the objectives of the Youth Offending Team.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings including the presentation of information.
- Maintain records and data systems to enable the measurement of team.
- Undertake duties outside normal office hours as required including evening and week end work, in particular when developing group work, reporting to Referral Order panels or working as part of Court duties, but also as part of a rota or in response to emergencies arising.
- Build effective relationships with partners and work across organisational boundaries. Represent the YOS at multi-agency panels where required.
- Work in partnership with the young person, their parents, professionals in the YOS and partner agencies and volunteers to help achieve the objectives of the young person’s supervision plan.

**Qualifications**:

- Educated to degree level or has evidence analytical skills in assessment.
- Hold a relevant degree or have experience working with vulnerable children with complex needs.
- Professional Certificate in Effective Practice.

**Experience**:

- Experience working as a Youth Justice Officer.
- At least one year’s experience of working with children and families.

**Knowledge:
**- Knowledge of the legislation governing the work of the Youth Offending Service and of the Youth Justice Board’s national standards.

**Skills & Abilities**:

- Ability to deal with people at all levels confidently, sensitively and diplomatically.
- Ability to engage with young people and their parents, and empathise with their perspective.
- Ability to identify, assess, and address risks presented by young people to themselves and others, with good analytical skills and sound judgement.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to use IT to record work effectively.
- Ability to manage relationships with young people in a firm and fair way, supporting compliance where possible and taking enforcement action where necessary.
- Well organised with the ability to work effectively and professionally under pressure.
- Ability to build effective relationships with partners and work across organisational boundaries.
- Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
