College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences is one of the largest colleges of its type in the UK. It is comprised of the Brunel Design School and six departments that cover Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics.

Brunel Design School is seeking to appoint a lecturer/senior lecturer with all-round skillsets in design for manufacture and sustainability. Knowledge and skills in digital prototyping would also be highly desirable.

You will primarily teach on programmes such as BSc/MDes Design, BSc /MDes Product Design Engineering, and BA/MDes Industrial Design. You will also provide specialist support to undergraduate and postgraduate students in their major/dissertation project work. You will work collaboratively within course teams, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum in innovative and critical directions.

Around 40% of your time is for research, and you are expected to enhance the school’s research portfolio through publication, research/innovation/impact generation.

You will have experience of higher education (or comparable context), an ability to participate in curriculum development and assessment, a sound knowledge of the theories and practices in design for manufacture, for example, manufacturing processes for plastics, metals, generic multi-material processes, joining techniques, CAD/CAM technologies and additive manufacture. You should also have sound knowledge of design rules and constraints for volume production and design for assembly. Sustainability is a key theme of our programmes, and we expect your contribution to design for sustainability courses at product/system levels.

You should be comfortable working with diverse cohorts of students and committed to a teaching approach that integrates theory and practice and will engage students through a combination of innovative pedagogy, knowledge exchange and research.

You’ll have or should be willing to attain, with Brunel’s support, a relevant teaching qualification or recognition e.g., Fellowship status of the Higher Education Academy.

You should be a researcher who is keen to work in a multidisciplinary environment, and use your academic and/or industry-based experience to support the development of student work. You’ll be proactive and actively contribute to the programme’s aims and vision. You should have a strong understanding of the contemporary context of Design for Manufacture and Sustainability and be engaged in relevant networks and communities of practice.
