Oxford, United Kingdom University of Oxford Full time

The post holder will contribute to the Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) research programme. CCG is a £38m, five-year research programme directly funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). CCG aims to help grow the evidence base in helping countries to take a path of low-carbon economic development, by providing research and public goods with a high level of impact working directly with FCDO outposts and national governments of partner countries (at the time of writing, these include Kenya, Lao PDR, Zambia, Viet Nam, Ghana and India).

The post holder will contribute to research activities of the Decarbonising Transport work stream of CCG, which is hosted between University of Oxford, University of Strathclyde, Imperial College London and Loughborough University. As CCG is an applied research programme funded directly by a UK Government department, research activities can be varied in nature and are formed around responding to the demands of the CCG partner country network as well as fulfilling the objectives of the long-term research plan. As such, successful research on the CCG programme involves producing both high-impact applied research and peer-reviewed scientific outputs. To offer some examples of research undertaken in the CCG Decarbonising Transport work stream, recent activities have included (i) working with academics at Strathmore University and University of Nairobi (both in Nairobi, Kenya) to advance state-of-the-art transport-energy system modelling in Kenya to inform the Kenyan Ministry of Transport on effective policies for meeting established Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement; (ii) working with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to develop frameworks for advancing e-mobility and renewable energy integration in Asia and the Pacific; (iii) working with the German development agency _Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeitagency_ (GIZ) to develop platforms for sharing open transport data on a global scale. With regards to (i), TEAM-Kenya was launched in February 2024, attended by senior civil servants from the Kenyan State Department for Transport and e-mobility leads at UNEP and GIZ Kenya. The purpose of this post is to build on successful, policy-relevant stakeholder engagement and expand the methodology and its use to other CCG partner countries.

The post holder will report to Prof Christian Brand who will be responsible for line management of the post holder’s work on the CCG programme
