The principal responsibilities of the Respiratory Specialist are: Assess and review patients that have been referred to the Home Oxygen Assessment Service in line with the BTS Clinical Component for the Home Oxygen Service: - Pre-screen patients to ensure that only those with a clinical need are invited for oxygen assessment, and to ensure that all relevant patient information is provided by the referrer prior to the first appointment - Undertake ABG sampling and accurately interpret the results - Conduct 6 minute walk tests or shuttle walk tests with patients requiring ambulatory oxygen therapy - Educate patients and their carers on the use of home oxygen therapy including the risks associated with incorrect use and self management of their condition including smoking cessation and nutritional advice - Ensure onward referral to other teams / services in line with local referral protocols - Maintain appropriate and current patient records - Liaise with patient families and their carers and manage emotional situations professionally - Accurately and promptly complete the HOOF and forward to the Home Oxygen Supplier - Review complex cases with Healthcare Professionals as appropriate - Communicating and promoting the service locally - Ensure the service is highly integrated within the care pathway - When required, attend quarterly service review meetings with the CCG ensuring that actions and activities required by the CCG are completed in a timely manner - Propose and implement continuous improvements to the service - Becoming a source of respiratory expertise to all clinicians and provide specialist respiratory training, advice and support to all clinicians who require it.
