Assistant Ranger
We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Ranger to join our team at Bodiam Castle.
Working in some of the nation’s most spectacular places and spaces, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are beautifully presented and continue to take our visitors’ breath away.
**This role is based in a remote location, with no access to public transport.**
What it's like to work here:The Bateman’s and Bodiam Castle portfolio consists of two very different properties run by one hardworking team.
Bodiam Castle is an impressive 14th century moated castle and one of the most famous castles in Britain. Ten miles away in Burwash nestles Bateman’s, the former home of Rudyard Kipling. This 17th century house remains much the same as the world-famous writer left it. The garden and landscape at Bateman's provided the inspiration for Rudyard's mythical tales in Puck of Pook's Hill and Rewards and Fairies.
What you'll be doing:With your endless passion for our work, you’ll help with the protection and care of habitats, wildlife, property and machinery, and your passion will inspire others to love this beautiful place as much as you do.
Based at Bodiam Castle and working under the supervision of our Ranger, you’ll make sure that at every twist and turn of this fantastic landscape we’re delivering outstanding outdoors experiences and excellent conservation work. The Assistant Ranger role comprises largely of practical tasks; mowing, brush cutting and supporting the management of our 51 veteran trees.
The castle is home to a nationally significant Daubenton's Bat maternal roost, managed by the Ranger team and a local bat ecologist, and we are developing projects to create or improve our priority grassland and water habitats. You’ll also share and promote the work that we do here, ensuring special places like these are here to be both protected and enjoyed by everyone for ever.
This will see you responding to queries and explaining the value of the work being undertaken. In this role, you’ll work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings. Your rota will be annualised, comprising of five short days totalling 22.5 hours per week during spring, autumn and summer, and 3 short days totalling 12 hours per week during winter.
