**Job summary**:
**An opportunity has arisen for a fixed-term position within the Novel and Dangerous Pathogens (NADP) training team, based at Porton Down. The vacancy is for a Microbiology Trainer providing expertise in this area.**

The Novel and Dangerous Pathogens (NADP) training group sits in the Operations team, within the Specialised Microbiology and Laboratories (SML) directorate. This directorate sits within the Science Group. NADP training team provides training for the Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre (VDEC) division and the Pathogen Characterisation Diagnostics & Evaluation (PCDE) division within the SML directorate.

Its work focuses on designing and delivering scientific and safety training for scientists within our department but also providing those courses on a commercial basis to scientists in the UK and Internationally. The group is also part of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Applied Biosafety and Training and so supports WHO to provide training internationally. As such multiple international links and networks are part of its remit.

**Job description**:
The post holder (Microbiology Trainer), will provide a traditional form of microbiology training, which includes developing, delivering and evaluating specialist scientific training courses to meet the needs of the range of learners - which includes creating content for on-line learning, lesson plans and practical materials. The digital trainer will also be required to perform such duties.

**Responsibilities section**:

- Design, create and deliver a range of Biosafety/Microbiology training resources to ensure project targets are met.
- To define training needs and design training programmes to improve safety and performance and document the training delivered.
- Lead the project team or project area to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate and to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods.
- Establish links and collaborations within and outside the UKHSA as necessary to benefit the project and/or department.
- Provide introductory training in safe working practices at Containment Level 3.
- Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet project targets and lead on preparation of presentations and publications.
- To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade.
- To ensure that the project team undertakes work in accordance with the UKHSA’s Code of Safety Practice and to work within any Quality Systems that are applicable to the site.
- To maintain health and safety competence to the national occupational standard ‘Make sure your actions reduce risks to health and safety’ (NOS HSS1).
- To fulfil the requirements of UKHSA Values and Behaviours: ‘Health, Safety and Wellbeing’ commensurate with grade.
- To comply with all UKHSA policies and procedures to fulfil the requirements of the UKHSA Health and Safety Risk Management Protocol.
- To achieve and maintain own health and safety competence set out in national occupational standard ‘Identify, assess and control health and safety risks’ (NOS HSP6).
- Take responsibility for ensuring the health and safety of the CL2 and 3 laboratory, procedures and laboratory users in line with UKHSA policies, Codes of Practice, SOPs and other good practice and guidance.
- To achieve and maintain health and safety competence as a laboratory supervisor in line with UKHSA policies and guidance.
