London, United Kingdom Whittington Health NHS Trust Full time

**Title**: Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP), known within Islington as School Wellbeing Practitioner (SWP)

Islington School Wellbeing Service (SWS) is a Mental Health Support Team (MHST), established following the government Green Paper: Transforming Children & Young People’s Mental Health Provision. We aim to promote positive mental health in Islington schools through preventative and early intervention input.

The SWS promotes positive mental health in Islington schools. The role of the School Wellbeing Practitioner (SWP) is to work as part of the SWS to deliver the three core functions of MHSTs, which are:
1. Delivering evidence-based interventions for children and young people (CYP) with mild-to-moderate mental health needs.
2. Supporting the senior mental health lead in each setting to introduce, develop and deliver the whole school approach.
3. Giving timely advice to school and liaising with external specialist services, to help CYP to get the right support and stay in education.

The post holder will cover a patch of primary schools and will be based mainly in the community. In practice, this means working in school settings, with some online home working or working from our team base at the Laycock Centre.

All team members are involved in the collection of data around the work we do to help evidence the important service we provide and reflect on areas we may wish to develop.

Islington SWS is a multidisciplinary team, bringing together a range of disciplines, perspectives, and experience to best support the communities we work with. We are comprised of colleagues from clinical, educational and counselling psychology and systemic family therapy disciplines, we also have maingrade and senior SWP positions. In September 2023, following a successful bid, we will be expanding to include 4 trainee EMHPs as well as additional posts at bands 6 and 7. All of our work is supported by our two highly skilled team coordinators, our Service Manager and Operations Manager.

We are a friendly, dynamic, and inclusive team. We make space for reflection and connection through the working week. Our SWPs have individual supervision from a team psychologist and have access to peer group supervision with SWS and CAMHS colleagues. Every new member of the team is assigned a buddy.

Islington is an inner London borough with a richly diverse community. We have a resident child population of 40,000, with 70% being from BME groups and approximately 120 different languages spoken in these homes. As a service we reflect on equality, equity, and inclusion and promote mutual respect and understanding to empower ourselves and those we work with. We welcome applicants with similar values and through inclusive recruitment practices, aim for the make-up of our team to reflect the Islington residents we serve.

The SWS is made up of a North and South team. We work with all of Islington’s mainstream primary and secondary schools to support the mental health and emotional wellbeing of children, young people and their families. The service is delivered as a partnership between Whittington Health and the London Borough of Islington and funded by NHS England.

As a relatively new service, we continue to develop our offer to schools and value initiative and ideas from all team members. We strive to work collaboratively with young people, families and schools and develop our offer based upon participation and feedback.

The post holder will;
- Manage their own patch of schools and deliver a wide range of interventions, including individual, group and whole class interventions and workshops in school settings.
- Provide assessment and intervention from an inclusive, values base, which recognises and respects diversity.
- Provide assessment, risk management, and interventions for children and young people experiencing emotional and mental health difficulties (either directly or with their parents/ carers).
- Deliver outcome focused, evidence-based interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties.
- Work collaboratively with your school links (and other staff) to create school cultures that positively support emotional health and wellbeing.
- Where appropriate signpost referrals for children and young people with more complex needs to the relevant service.
- Engage in robust managerial and clinical supervision
- Practice, evidence, reflect on and demonstrate an ability to manage one’s own caseload in conjunction with the requirements of the team.
- Work in collaboration with educational staff, parents, children, young people and the wider community to enhance and broaden access to mental health services.
- Work collaboratively with team members and other colleagues, where appropriate, to develop individual and group interventions and workshops for children and young people, parents/ carers and school staff.
- Complete all requirements relating to data collection.
- Keep cohe
