**Job summary**:
The MOD currently maintains around 145,000 bed spaces and 65,000 houses around the world in order to accommodate Service personnel. However, fundamental reform is required - the system increasingly does not meet the needs and expectations of our personnel and costs are rising rapidly.
In November 2015, the Defence People Committee endorsed the establishment of a new change programme to explore how we could make greater use of the accommodation, including potential provision of an “accommodation payment” which Service personnel (SP) could use in the private housing market. Any solution needs to be more attractive to personnel, meet the wider policy objectives of the Services and be consistent with wider Departmental activities.
While the current accommodation offer is attractive for some, for many it is not; SP are essentially unable to choose how, where or with whom to live. Our system of mandated entitlements means we cannot account for the increasingly varied accommodation needs and preferences of our SP; the benefit of the offer is unevenly spread among the population as a result. This inflexibility forces some SP to opt out of subsidised accommodation, while others are forced to compromise on family life because we cannot support their preferences.
FAM is looking at options to widen entitlement, give personnel more choice about how, where and with whom to live, whilst providing support for those who wish to own their own homes to provide more stability for their families whilst still supporting the needs of the Services.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
