**Job summary**:
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales.

The CPS is independent, and we make our decisions independently of the police and government.

Our duty is to make sure that the right person is prosecuted for the right offence, and to bring offenders to justice wherever possible.

The CPS:

- decides which cases should be prosecuted;
- determines the appropriate charges in more serious or complex cases, and advises the police during the early stages of investigations;
- prepares cases and presents them at court; and
- provides information, assistance and support to victims and prosecution witnesses.

Around 6,000 people work for the Crown Prosecution Service, across England and Wales in a variety of roles. Almost half our employees are lawyers, who are responsible for deciding whether to prosecute cases, and represent the Crown in many hearings in the courts.

The rest work to assist prosecutors preparing cases for court, or in other professions including operational delivery, finance, human resources, communications and digital and technology services.
- Formal discipline action, any formal action regarding attendance, poor performance or any restriction of duties as a result of disciplinary action.

**Job description**:
CPSD is a ‘virtual’ CPS Area. It provides charging decisions on priority cases. Much of CPSD’s work is out of hours, so that we can provide an emergency response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Chief Crown Prosecutor (CCP) will lead and manage the Area directly through the senior management team.

The post holder will have a key role to play in maximising efficiencies across the CPS on both casework and support service issues. Through the Directors of Legal Services they will be accountable to the DPP for the quality of legal decisions; and to the Chief Executive Officer for the delivery of and business outcomes.

Within the context of the CPS over-arching strategic objectives as set out in our CPS 2025 Strategy, the post holder will be accountable for setting the business direction, inspiring our people to meet the Vision and Values of the organisation, embedding digital business and will visibly lead the Area ensuring performance against all targets, priorities and objectives is met.

The CCP is a key leader within the wider organisation and will contribute to setting the tone and standard of leadership expected in a modern and progressive public service organisation.

The post holder will be the line manager of the Senior District Crown Prosecutors (SDCP), and the Area Business Manager.

Accordingly, the CCP will inspire their direct reports to lead their teams to meet organisational priorities. They will also undertake all line management performance and development reviews and assessment in line with CPS policies and procedures.

The CCP is required to deploy Area resources and staff available to them, including the SDCPs, efficiently and in line with organisation priorities. The CCP is accountable for all Casework decisions within the Area.

The CCP will be accountable for the effective, transparent and efficient management of the Area budget, supported by the Area Business Manager. The post is designated by the DPP as a Crown Prosecutor under the terms of section 1 (3) of the Prosecution of Offences Act (1985).
