**Job description**:
Detention Engagement Teams (DETs) are a dynamic and responsive team working as part of Detention, Progression and Returns Command (DPRC) to enhance the quality and frequency of engagements between Home Office and the people entering Immigration Removal Centres (IRC).

Responsible for provision of on-site day to day engagement between Home Office and detainees, the team engages with detainees to create robust returns plans with each individual, utilising existing opportunities to engage with detainees (induction, detention reviews) as well as identifying further opportunities through their liaison with the individual to detect and overcome existing or perceived barriers and concerns around return.

Yarl's Wood IRC is one of the seven Immigration Removal Centre’s currently operating in the UK, providing a humane, safe and secure environment whilst the Home Office considers appropriate resolution of their case.

The role of the Support Officer is an Operational role that is interesting and challenging, demanding high levels of co-operation from our detainees, stakeholders and suppliers.

You will require excellent communication skills to deal with different situations. Self-confidence, personal integrity and emotional intelligence are also required within this challenging environment.

Training and development will be provided to undertake this rewarding role.

The Detention Engagement Team works on a roster system with shifts generally between 7.30am and 7:30pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Due the nature of this role, this position is not suitable for hybrid working or part time, and is only available on a full time basis.

**Person specification**:
Key responsibilities will include (but not limited to):
To support the Engagement Officer in increasing returns and reducing the number of bed nights utilised by:

Allocating papers for service to the appropriate Engagement Officer and arranging engagement slots via the service provider as required. Immigration paperwork will generally be served to people by Engagement Officers, however on occasion Support Officers may be required to complete this function; e.g. where staff shortages or annual leave occurs and to ensure operational needs are met.
- Working closely with the Welfare Office within the immigration removal centre, dealing appropriately with any issues that arise. The Welfare Office is run by the service provider and is a key touch-point for people to raise any concerns they may have.
- Conducting interviews with those detained, as required.
- Dealing with straightforward resident requests and/or routing to the Engagement Officer or case owner as required.
- Flagging contract issues appropriately and in a timely manner to line manager or Compliance team.
- Contributing to the compilation of statistics.
- Recording all interactions on Home Office IT systems in an accurate and timely manner.

**Essential Criteria**
- Ability to work in a fast paced operational environment.
- Demonstrable competence in Microsoft suite (including One drive, Share Point, Teams and Excel).
- Ability to manage own workload.
- Strong verbal communication skills and an ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Experience of working in an Immigration Removal Centre, Prison or Custodial Environment.
- Customer Service experience.
