**Job summary**:

This role will provide business, science, and people leadership driving transformative change, innovation, and science excellence for APHA.

In this post, you will be responsible for the provision of comprehensive and consistent biological risk management to their nominated department and throughout APHA.

You will act as an enabler of work and to provide assurance that all legal compliance obligations are being fulfilled, through provision of assurance of all laboratory and specialist work, including ACDP3, SAPO3 and SAPO4 facilities. You will identify and act upon areas of non-compliance or areas for improvement.

**Job description**:

- Act as first point of contact for their nominated department on all matters relating to biological risk. Assurance activities must be undertaken according to the Agency audit and inspection plan to ensure full legal compliance and to identify any areas of not compliance. The post holder will have authority to immediately stop work if there is a series breach of biosafety or general health and safety rules.
- Undertake accident and incident investigations including root cause analysis and human factors analysis. Prepare Lessons Learnt documents for Agency wide publication and sharing with other stakeholders as appropriate.
- Act as functional line manager for Departmental Safety Officers and high containment Building Officers.
- Ensure that risk assessments relating to high containment work are suitable and sufficient.
- Act as a member of the APHA Biological Safety Committee, reviewing risk assessments for ACDP3, SAPO3 and SAPO4 work and GM risk assessments following submission to the committee
- Deliver, along with the rest of the Biological Risk team, the APHA Biological Risk Training programme. Undertake annual review of content and revise where required in light of new legislation or requirements.
- Collate and analyse Safety Performance Indicators for APHA SAPO4 facilities.
- Undertake prepatory work prior to visits by the Regulator in line with the Health and Safety Executive APHA intervention plan.

**Person specification**:
The post holder must have microbiology laboratory experience and working in bio-containment environment with sufficient technical knowledge and enough standing and respect for their instruction to be acted upon. The post holder must demonstrate a commitment to the management of safety. They must develop a good understanding of the regulatory obligations of APHA and full training will be provided to acquire this critical expertise.
