- Job description- This role is based at the Thames Barrier and qualifies for Inner London Weighting (£3889).
Your skills and experience will help the Thames Tidal Walls and Embankments Asset Performance Team manage the Tidal Thames Flood and Coastal Risk Management assets, reducing the risk of tidal flooding to London.
You will be providing technical tidal flood risk responses on behalf of Environment Agency and local authorities as part of our statutory planning and flood risk activity permitting consultation work; influencing colleagues, developers, and engineers to manage/reduce tidal flood risk and improve the condition of the Thames Tidal Flood Defences.
This role will help you develop a technical understanding of tidal flood risk management, local and national planning policy, and the Thames Estuary 2100 plan. You will be given the opportunity to influence local planning policy and develop project management experience through our Capital and Revenue programme.
All Flood Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) officers are expected to ensure their activities are completed in accordance with Environment Agency Health, Safety and Wellbeing policies.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- The Tidal Walls and Embankments Asset Performance Team ensure the integrity of the Thames Tidal Defences on both shores of the Tidal Thames from Teddington to Dartford through an agreed programme of asset inspections, enforcement, third party works and delivery of Capital and Revenue programmes.
You will ensure we take a consistent approach to managing flood risk through planning and development along the Tidal Thames.
- Experience/skills required- Working closely with colleagues, developers, flood defence owners and engineers to maintain the Thames Tidal Defences and contribute to the delivery of Thames Estuary 2100 Plan; your ability to adapt, communicate and use your initiative to influence and overcome problems is what will set you apart.

We are seeking someone with passion for the environment and desire to learn new skills. Ideally you will have an engineering background and some knowledge of planning policy. Flood risk and asset management experience would be useful although not essential.
