**Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship position at Castle School (SEN)**

Castle is a successful 5 - 18 special school for pupils who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The school is designated for pupils with moderate learning difficulties; however, the majority of pupils have additional needs, including autism, speech and language difficulties and some behavioural issues.

All pupils are taught in small classes, the majority of which have teaching assistants, in addition to the teacher. We follow the Team Teach behaviour management system.

**Apprenticeship overview**:

- ** Salary**: £6.40 an hour, _Automatic pay increase after one year on programme for 19+ year-olds_
- **Working week**: Monday 8:30am - 4:30pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 8:30am - 3:30pm (Term-time only)
- **Total hours per week**: 32.5 hours a week
- **Expected duration**: 18 months
- Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship standard qualification
- **Location**:Castle School, Odell Road, Walsall, West Midlands, WS3 2ED

**Role and Responsibilities**:
The purpose of this Teaching Assistant role is to work, usually in the classroom, with the teacher to support access to learning for pupils and provide general support to the teacher in the management of pupils and classroom. Liaising with the Senior Leadership Team, all Teachers and support staff, Parents and carers and LEA representatives.
- Attend to pupils’ personal needs, and implement related personal programmes including, social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters.
- Supervise and support pupils, including those with special needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning.
- Establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs.
- Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
- Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.
- Encourage pupils to act independently as appropriate.
- Education/behaviour Plans and Personal Care programmes

**Support for the Teacher**:

- Prepare classroom as directed for lessons, clear afterwards and assist with the display of pupils work.
- Be aware of pupil problems/progress/achievements and report to the teacher as agreed.
- Undertake basic pupil record keeping as requested.
- Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate.

**Support for the School**:

- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
- Be aware of and support differences and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
- Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school. Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.
- Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
- Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtimes as directed.
- Strong commitment to furthering equalities in both service delivery and employment practice.
- You must promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young and vulnerable people that you are responsible for or come into contact with.

**Additional Duties**:

- Attend tutorials and complete coursework for the relevant NVQ Level to high standard.
- Play a full part in the life of the school community.
- Comply with data protection legislation and expectations for confidentiality.
- Identifying and agreeing personal development objectives with the line manager.
- Making effective use of the development opportunities available to you.
- Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of pupils in your care or that you come into contact with in accordance with the whole school Safeguarding Policy.
- Any other duties commensurate with this post as directed.
