**Salary**: starting at £26,000 per annum, plus an additional payment of £3,048 per annum, plus Serco benefits
**Location**: HMP Dovegate, Uttoxeter
**Working hours**: Full-time, 40 hours per week, rotational shift work
Here at Serco we are looking for Dog Handler to join our team at HMP Dovegate a category B male establishment prison based on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border near Uttoxeter. The operational capacity is for 1160 prisoners and it takes a whole team of people to keep the facility safe, secure and in proper working order.
The primary role of the Dog Handler and the Dual-Purpose Drug Detection Dog will be to assist in the detection of illicit substances and mobile phones in all areas of the prison. The effectiveness of the Establishment’s dogs, as a commodity, will require this resource to be dynamic and responsive to local intelligence, security strategies and priorities.
The job holder will be required to carry out some of the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
Maintaining responsibility for the dog inside and outside working hours including kenneling, hygiene, exercise, health and welfare, informing the Custodial Manager of any incidents or issues involving the dog. Asserting and co-ordinating adequate training requirements for the dog. Maintain day to day obedience and skills of the dog, upholding standards in line with the requirements of national guidelines. Identify reasons for the dog underperforming and take corrective action. Carry out patrols internally and externally. Participate in the delivery of dog handling training to others as required. Conduct monthly searches of all prisoner and non-prisoner areas. Conduct target searches as directed by the Operation Managers. Record, collate and maintain statistical information based on the agreed search schedule, to include: Area Searches, Vehicle searches, Target Led Searches, Staff Searches/Screening and Visitor Searches/Screening.
