Head Gardener

AKilleavy Castle Estate is seeking a Head Gardener for this hotel development.

In your role as Head Gardener, you will be responsible for managing the garden operations of the Estate, working with senior level management to ensure the constant supply of fresh produce to the outlets and also the upkeep of the estate as required.

**Role Objective;**

To ensure that the estate positively projects itself with a farm to fork ethos and that the gardens and environs are maintained to the highest standard.

**Key Duties include;**
- Develop in conjunction with the Head Chef a planting schedule that will best fit the supply requirements of the Estate (including the hotel, castle, and farm store)
- Maintaining and developing the gardens of the Estate.
- In charge of grass cutting, weed control and leaf raking.
- Planting new trees, flowers and various plants as required and to budgets and in line with the surrounding landscape.
- Maintenance of plant tubs baskets be they internal or external.
- Making sure that all garden equipment is correctly maintained and serviced.
- Seeding plants and watering them at the correct times.
- Clearing rubbish and litter away from the garden and grounds.
- Planting of various varieties of fruit trees and rare native trees as directed.
- Producing various designs and layouts of garden landscapes.
- Giving advice and guidance to hotel management and directors on all matters relating to gardening and the supply of produce to the Estate.
- Deciding on which seeds to plant and which locations.
- Maintenance of estate paths.
- Obtaining written quotations and achieving best value for contracted work and products and services that fall into the gardening and horticulture scope.
- Supervising the work of laborers involved in any projects.
- Ensuring a safe working environment for everyone working in the gardens and the Estate.
- Undertaking the basic servicing and repair of all garden machinery.
- Hotel and / or farm maintenance / duties as required depending on the time of year or season.
- Other duties as required and requested by management.

**Key Skills and Experience include;**
- At least 1-2 years’ experience in a similar role
- Self-motivated and have the ability to prioritise work.
- Ability to work on own initiative.
- Have the ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment.
- Ability to use a wide range of horticultural machinery and powered hand tools.
- Certification in pesticide use.
- Good knowledge of plants and vegetables.
- Knowledge of organic gardening methods and techniques.
- First Aid Qualification.
