Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

Are you interested in working for a top-ranked Management School which has achieved accreditation from the three largest and most influential business school associations: AACSB, AMBA and EQUISP.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the field of operational research to work on simulation and modelling to help reduce plastic packaging and food waste through product innovation simulation in a UKRI funded project entitled “Reducing plastic packaging and food waste through product innovation simulation”

UKRI has announced 10 university led research projects will receive £8m in funding from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. The investment is part of the Enabling Research competition in the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge (SSPP). It aims to tackle plastic waste in the UK. This project led by London City University (PI, Dr Christian Reynolds) in partnership with the University of Sheffield, Greenwich University and Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), is one of these funded projects.

You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team (the Management School, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and the Departments of Geography & Chemistry) at the University of Sheffield and in collaboration with researchers from London City University, Greenwich University and WRAP on this project. You will help to develop and deliver a model that simulates product innovation in reducing plastic packaging and food waste which will estimate the impact of various decisions in the food supply chain.

The project will help to reduce plastic pollution and food waste by providing a decision support tool to trigger action in the food industry and by consumers. Evidence concerning plastic and food waste will be generated by updating the Household Simulation Model (HHSM). The HHSM was piloted by the University of Sheffield and WRAP to model the impacts of food product innovation quickly to enable manufacturers to select the best innovations and interventions and to prioritise their development & deployment. The project in incorporate the current HHSM data on 1) plastic packaging options and composition 2) household behavioural insights around packaging and food with specific data on fresh produce and 3) plastic in the supply chain and environmental impacts (via SCEnATi - a data analytics tool of the food supply chain processes.

You will develop the HHSM, integrate SCEnATi, WRAP and Valpak data and run the main analysis needed for work package 1 and secondary analysis for other work packages in the project. You will also assist in preparing and documenting the data for archiving to the standards required by the data management plan.

We are committed to enabling our employees to work in a hybrid model with flexibility over when, where and how to achieve the required outputs, in discussion with your manager. We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
