London, United Kingdom Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Full time

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our busy Infection prevention and control team.

The surveillance officer will be based at West Middlesex Hospital and has primary responsibility for the surgical site infection surveillance programme (SSIS). This service helps hospitals in England record and follow up incidents of infection after surgery, and use results to review or change practice as necessary. As well as collating surgical site surveillance data, the post also involves collecting and reporting other types of infection data such as blood stream infections.

**Main functions include**:
- To be responsible for the collection, organisation, analysis, reporting and feedback of Public Health England’s surgical site infection surveillance programme within Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust.

To perform ongoing systematic and active surgical site surveillance following guidelines set down by
Public Health England.

To assist with collation of health-care associated infection data when required.

To act as the point of contact for queries arising from the data collected.
To interact with patients who meet the criteria for the surgical site surveillance programme
- To undertake data collection, collation handling, analysis and feedback of surgical site surveillance and audit information.
- To implement new categories of surgical procedures into the surveillance programme as required.
- To be responsible for checking daily theatre schedules to identify relevant patients to screen as part of the SSIS program.
- To work closely with the IPC team and the microbiologists to raise any issues or concerns that may arise and take action as directed.
- To ensure that all relevant data is collected during the inpatient stay.
- To assist with collation of health-care associated infection data as directed by the IPC team.
- To liaise and interact with trust staff to improve the quality and validity of data originating from clinical notes, nursing notes, data bases and theatre notes.
- To raise awareness and promote the SSIS programme within the relevant areas in the Planned Care and Women and Children’s Directorates.
- To meet relevant patients and be a point of contact for patients in case of wound issues post-discharge. Ensure that whilst at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust the patient is aware of the SSIS programme, the role of the team and the follow up care offered.

We provide services from two main hospitals, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital, and a number of clinics across London and the South-East.

We have over 6,000 members of staff that arePROUD to Carefor nearly one million people. Both hospitals provide full clinical services, including full maternity, emergency and children’s, in addition to a range of community-based services across London, such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.

We’re one of the safest and best performing Trusts in the country. We’re also one of the top trusts to work for - our staff say they’re engaged, motivated, and would recommend us as a place to work and receive treatment.

In 2020 Trust was rated by the Care Quality Commission as Outstanding in the well-led and use of resources domains and Good in the safe, effective, caring, and responsive domains. The Trust as a whole was Good, but the Chelsea site was Outstanding.

Our facilities are some of the best in the country. We have been investing around £10 million a year in our estate. We are currently spending £25 million on expanding our adult and neonatal critical care facilities at Chelsea and Westminster and redevelopment of our children’s unit at West Middlesex - in partnership with our charity, CW+ and generous donors.
