Bright Start 5 - 19 offers help to families with children aged five to nineteen years old. Early intervention and prevention is at the heart of our work. This role will be co-located in the Bright Start (Central) locality and New River College. You will be part of a diverse and friendly team which delivers flexible help to families whose children/child attend NRC by giving advice or support, provides a rapid response to families, and wraps around universal/existing services to help with emerging needs as early as possible. The teams also offer longer term support when needed to assist families with multiple complex needs to cope with stress and build resilience.

We are looking for anEducation Support Practitioner to bepart of the Bright Start 5-19 service providing a rapid and enabling response supporting families and young people within New River College Pupil Referral Unit and/or Islington’s Alternative Provision providers.

You will support families reach their full potential and to support children and young people improve outcomes, particularly in relation to attainment, attendance and reducing school exclusions.

The role of Education Support Practitioner will to be provide day to day support through a range of means including direct work with families and indirect support by building strong relationships with schools, health practitioners and community organisations. You will be working face to face with families at NRC and online doing one to one work and facilitating group work. You will help families feel confident and resourceful whether in relation to practical problems to do with housing, employment, health or education, or the emotional aspects of family life like relationships and parenting skills.

You will be a meticulous record keeper so that we can demonstrate the great outcomes you will achieve. You will be a great communicator, taking a relationship based approach and delivering support that improves family resilience.

You will be part of the Bright Start 5-19 service providing a rapid and enabling response supporting families and young people within New River College Pupil Referral Unit and/or Islington’s Alternative Provision providers.

- Work alongside NRC and other practitioners involved in a child’s life to improve educational outcomes
- improving attendance, attainment and reducing school exclusions.
- Engage with and build relationships with NRC, schools and AP providers in the locality to promote identification of children in need of help.
- Promote staff development and share good practice around child and young people centred work and managing complex needs in the community.
- Deliver group work to NRC parents and/or children with a focus on improving educational outcomes.
- Participate in a flexible approach to meet the needs of NRC children with poor attendance, able to provide planned pieces of work, one off quick response, advice and guidance to NRC, schools and practitioners across the partnership to improve attendance.
- Keep informed of current policy and research developments (e.g. in the fields of adolescent development, mental health, family relationships, peer on peer violence, child sexual exploitation, working with gangs, foster care and multi-agency working),attend and contribute to training, and ongoing staff development.
- Participate in data collection and recording into the relevant management information systems in order to capture all necessary inputs, outputs and outcomes for young people, their families and carers.
- Use information systems to log, monitor and track pupil attendance, exclusions and attainment progression across a locality in order to inform targeting of resources, planning and delivery of appropriate intervention.
- Available when and where the need is. This will likely include home visiting, time spent on NRC school sites, working early mornings to bring children in to school, evenings and weekend work.
- Understand the disadvantages faced by residents in the locality and work to reduce inequality.
- Work in accordance with local and national child protection and safeguarding procedures and adhere to London Borough of Islington policies and procedures.
- Ensure that support is trauma informed and rooted in motivational practice.
- To work preventively with families and young people who are at risk of exclusion.
