**About the Service/Department**
Tower Hamlets Café provides a safe space for people who feel that they are experiencing or moving towards a mental health crisis. People aged 18+ from Borough can self-present at the Café to get help and support from trained staff and volunteers. Staff and volunteers in the Café will discuss with people the nature of the crisis that they are experiencing and support them with a range of interventions including assessments and safety plans, mini wellness, recovery action plans and social prescribing. Staff and volunteers will have an asset-based approach, focusing on the strengths and coping skills of people using the Café, and help them to understand how they could use these assets to decrease their own distress and promote their wellbeing. In line with the principles of the Hestia Approach the Café will be co-produced with those who use it as well as with NHS colleagues, local voluntary, statutory and community-based organisations. The Café will be a local, warm, welcoming and non-stigmatising environment offering communal eating, a range of activities and a quiet, low sensory space to cater for individual needs and aspirations

**About the role**
To provide excellent quality support and interventions to customers experiencing or likely to experience a mental health crisis as an alternative to using statutory crisis services

Some other main responsibilities of the role include:

- To motivate customers to identify causes of crises and to prevent these issues triggering crisis in the future
- To provide support to customers using Hestia’s Tower Hamlets Café to reduce their crisis by offering a range of activities and interventions within the service during opening times
- To carry out individual one to one sessions with customers and, where appropriate, to support them to develop their own mini wellness, recovery action plan

**About you**
- Demonstrable experience of working with individuals who have experienced mental health and / or dual diagnosis issues.
- Knowledge of issues affecting those individuals with a range of mental health conditions, how to communicate effectively with these individuals and how to support them with dignity and respect.
- Knowledge of relevant Mental Health legislation, in particular Care Program Approach (CPA) processes.
- Understanding of the principles of recovery as an ethos and a range of recovery approaches.
- Ability to work as part of a team, on own initiative and to oversee induction of new peer staff and volunteers.
- Awareness of health and safety issues.
- Willingness to cook and share a meal with the customers of the Cafe.
- Ability to work at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
- Good IT skills that includes a working knowledge of functions in MS Word, Outlook and the internet.
- Ability to complete and record basic financial transactions, i.e. managing petty cash.
- Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately.
