Job Introduction
Around one in seven adults are smokers in Brighton & Hove. This is a significantly higher rate than both the Southeast region and England. Smoking is one of the most significant factors that affect health inequalities and the biggest contributor to preventable ill-health, particularly cancer, coronary heart disease and respiratory disease.

The provision of skilled, face-to-face individual smoking cessation support boosts smokers’ quit rates by 50-100% - far more effective than individuals attempting to quit on their own. Brighton & Hove City Council commissions stop smoking services through local GP Practices and Community Pharmacies and provides services in the local hospital and through the council’s internal health trainer team. We have refreshed the design of our community service to create greater transparency, accountability, focus on performance and value for money.

The council has also re-established its Local Multi-Agency Tobacco Control Alliance which provides leadership through partnership-working to drive the tobacco control agenda in Brighton & Hove. It will also shortly be developing and delivering a comprehensive Tobacco Control Action Plan, which aims to reduce smoking prevalence, smoking harms and the significant health inequalities associated with smoking.

In light of this significant upscaling of our work in this area, we are recruiting to this Tobacco Control Programme Support Officer post. The post will provide comprehensive administrative support, project support and general assistance to the Health Improvement and Tobacco Control Programme Manager and the Local Tobacco Control Alliance.

This will involve significant contributions towards the development of a local multi-agency strategic approach to smoking and tobacco-related harm as well as helping with the administration, coordination, management and incentivisation of our large network of smoking cessation service providers and individual specialist advisers.

This is a fascinating job which involves the cultivation of a network of partnerships across the city, analysing provider performance, dealing with queries and developing a supportive community of practice for our smoking cessation advisers.

Additional Information
Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.
