This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES EMERGENCY MEDICINE Immediate resuscitation of critically ill patients and thereafter referral to the appropriate department of those patients who require admission. Definitive care of minor injuries and emergencies and other routine ED clinical work. Daily review and care of ED patients on the Clinical Decision Unit when in operation.

Communication and liaison with other departments within the hospital, both clinical and managerial. Communication and liaison with agencies outside the hospital including the emergency services and primary care trust. Responsibility for the supervision, training and education of junior medical staff, with an active role in the training of nursing and other staff, including medical students. The post holder may be named as the clinical supervisor of a number of junior medical staff.

The Trust receives medical students from both Birmingham and Warwick medical schools and an interest in teaching and training would be an advantage. The ED has an active teaching program for VTS trainees / FY2 and middle grades. The department also participates in the Regional Staff Grade and Specialist Registrar training programs. The post holder will be expected to make an active contribution to the planning and delivery of these programmes.

Dealing with personnel and other managerial issues, including ensuring that arrangements are in place for adequate staff to be available in relation to treatment and care of patients. Work with the clinical governance lead for the ED, ensuring the continuing development of the service, including the achievement of national targets. Playing a major part in the development of Emergency services within the county of Worcestershire. In keeping with national trends, the county aims to ensure the development of a comprehensive and efficient network of Emergency services over the next few years and the ED team will be involved in identifying and implementing any changes necessary to achieve this.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - GENERAL The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital. The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care. The post-holder will attend cross county and cross site meetings. To collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trusts and departmental objectives.

The post-holder will, if relevant, participate in the on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with Consultant colleagues in post. The Trust would expect a consultant whilst undertaking oncall duties to attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. The consultant on call must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team in the interests of patient safety. The post-holder, whilst undertaking weekend on call duties, will attend the hospital to undertake patient reviews.
