Team Structure:
Stephenson Harwood has recently launched a new, international maritime, trade and offshore (MTO) practice group to combine its ship finance, shipping, and trade and commodities expertise. The group offers a breadth of services to clients active in the commodity, shipping, insurance, and offshore sectors that few other firms can match. Our practice is international in nature and serviced by specialist lawyers operating out of our London, Dubai, Greater China, Seoul, and Singapore offices.
Our Trade & Commodities team, which sits within the new MTO group, is ranked in Tier 1 by Legal 500, is led by some of the most respected names in the field, and acts for a diverse range of clients involved in the extraction, production, supply, carriage, storage, financing, and industrial consumption of energy and natural resources. Our clients include energy companies, trading houses, financiers, utilities, industrial consumers, mining groups, and shipping companies.
Contentious work forms the core of our practice, with a non-exclusive focus on physical commodities, commodity finance, and shipping disputes. We also have a market-leading reputation for commodities fraud matters. Our caseload includes both litigation and arbitration, and is typically cross-jurisdictional in nature. We are often instructed at an early stage and spend much of our time helping clients solve problems in real-time before they manifest into disputes.
We also maintain a transactional and advisory element to our practice, assisting clients on a variety of off-take, supply, distribution, master, trading, tolling and other agreements, as well as financing structures (working closely with our dedicated trade and commodity finance team), charterparties, and contracts of affreightment.
Main Responsibilities:
**You will focus primarily on litigation and arbitration matters. Litigation work will typically be before the Commercial Court in London but may involve co-ordinating proceedings in other jurisdictions. Arbitration work may be institutional (typically ICC, LCIA or SIAC), trade (typically GAFTA, FOSFA or RSA/SAL), ad hoc, or on LMAA Terms.**:
You will develop your legal skills as a contract lawyer (particularly with respect to the sale, carriage, storage, and financing of goods) and be given exposure to a wide range of clients operating in the energy, metals, and soft commodities sectors. You will also broaden your skillset to include drafting and advisory work.
**Main responsibilities**:
Day to day case management, including:
- Acting as the key contact point for clients, experts, and counsel
- Drafting witness statements and other court/arbitration documents
- Drafting inter parties correspondence
- Legal and procedural research and drafting advice
- Attending meetings and hearings
Marketing, including:
- Preparing legal articles and updates
- Freedom and support to develop your own network
- Attending/participating in business development and profile-raising events (client networking events, seminars, giving talks etc.)
Attributes/Skills Required:
- Qualified lawyer with litigation/arbitration experience (preferably to include commodities and/or shipping work but, in the absence of direct experience, a keen interest in the sector)
- Team player (we are a compact, but growing, team, with a focus on support and cohesion)
- Resilient and dynamic mindset (ability to work under pressure across multiple workstreams)
- Willingness to take responsibility early on (with appropriate support)
- Excellent academic and professional qualifications
- Active interest in business development opportunities
