IBioIC was established in January 2014 to accelerate and de-risk the development and implementation of Industrial Biotechnology in Scotland, and to stimulate growth of the Industrial Biotechnology (IB) sector in Scotland by leveraging the knowledge and expertise in Scottish academic institutes. IBioIC’s mission is to enable the deployment of Scotland’s excellence across research, innovation and training in applied biotechnology to deliver health and wealth, green growth and an entrepreneurial nation. IBioIC has become a European centre of excellence, connecting global industry with outstanding academic expertise and government to bring new IB processes and products to the international market.

IBioIC is a key part of the Scottish National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology with the aim of creating a £1.2bn sector by 2025. This activity delivers against the National Strategy for Economic Transformation, Scotland’s Innovation Strategy and SFC’s Strategic Plan.

IBioIC has now secured long-term SFC Infrastructure funding to drive the growth of a thriving bioeconomy where its ambitions are even greater, putting Scotland firmly on the global map as the a place to develop and manufacture biotechnology products.

The role of the IBioIC Chair is a superb opportunity to contribute to a strategic economic sector in Scotland - a sector of global importance in which Scotland can be world-leading. The role also provides opportunities to support the development of Scotland’s Innovation ecosystem and to champion the role of innovation in the UK economy. It is essential that the Chairperson has the skills and experience to steer the future of the organisation and enable the Governing Board to work effectively.
