Manchester, United Kingdom The University of Manchester Full time

The University of Manchester Library is one of only five National Research Libraries and the third largest academic library in the UK. Our vast and rich collections (both print and digital) help us to deliver a world class library and information service for the University. We sit at the heart of the University experience for both learning and research and are fully committed to widening access to our expertise, collections and services to researchers, local schools, and others in the community.

The Library's Special Collections are among the richest holdings of rare books, manuscripts, archives, maps and visual collections in the world and are an outstanding resource. The collections are housed on three sites - the John Rylands Research Institute & Library, Main Library on the University campus and the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE centre at Manchester Central Library. Through the John Rylands Research Institute, we deliver an extensive programme of research on the collections, in collaboration with academic colleagues at the University.

We are seeking to appoint an Imaging Assistant who will play a key role in enabling digital access to our collections. Dealing with and responding to enquiries from customers internal and external to the University. You will take an audience-focused approach in dealing with a wide range of imaging enquiries from many different customers, and you will deliver excellent customer service.

You will negotiate with customers (including commercial customers, academic experts and general public audiences) to determine their exact and often complex imaging requirements; interrogate the Library’s catalogues and discovery systems to identify relevant special collections material for imaging; retrieve the material and assess its suitability for imaging; and collaborate with photographers and curators to ensure that requests are dealt with promptly and efficiently in line with image service policies and procedures. You will also liaise with metadata assistants over the creation of metadata. You will maintain accurate records of the imaging service and provide regular reports.
