Clinical Teaching Fellow in Anaesthesia
These are established full time positions with up to 48hr per week available. Applications for part time work are also welcomed. Up to 10hr per week will be allocated to development (depending on training requirements) with the balance being supervised clinical activity. All aspects of the CT3 Equivalent programme can be delivered. Development time may include Teaching; Research; Audit and Quality Improvement activities, the mix of these being negotiable.
The Department of Anaesthesia has a regular commitment to teaching Glasgow students in their 3rd and 4th year and ScotGEM students in their 2nd and 3rd years (ScotGEM is a 4 year postgraduate medical degree run by St Andrews and Dundee that is based mainly in primary care with secondary care ‘bursts’). The Dumfries undergraduate teaching programme is highly rated by our students whose feedback places us right at the top of the West of Scotland teaching league table in Surgery (including Anaesthesia), Medicine and Emergency Medicine. In addition the Department participates in training programmes for Foundation doctors including teaching practical skills and has several students and junior doctors joining us for taster weeks. Paramedic trainees from University of West of Scotland and the SAS training scheme are trained in both theatre and Critical Care. We run a monthly half day educational meeting for the department and there is an educational programme of scenarios and M&M meetings for the Theatre and Critical Care staff. PLS, APLS, ALS and ALERT courses are run in house and there are opportunities to teach for suitably qualified individuals.
The Department has a long history of contributing to Multi Centre research with a high recruitment rate. We are currently Scotland’s third highest contributor (in absolute numbers) to the Recovery COVID-19 trial. There will be the opportunity to be lead local investigator for other trials as well as audit and Quality Improvement projects.
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine is housed in purpose designed offices alongside the 17 bed Critical Care Unit and adjacent to our 8 theatre complex. The new Hospital was opened in December 2017 and is very well equipped with much of the design being influenced by members of the Department. There is a well equipped Education Centre as well as excellent educational facilities within the Department.
NHS Dumfries and Galloway serves a population of approximately 148,500 within a large geographical area of about 2,400 square miles. Dumfries and Galloway stretches from Langholm in the East to Drummore in the West, and from Kirkconnel and Carsphairn in the North down to Sandyhills on the Solway Coast. The Health Board currently employs around 4500 staff excluding GPs and Dentists.
Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is a brand new 344 bed state of the art hospital based in Dumfries. It is the main hospital for the region providing a wide range of inpatient and outpatient health services. The Galloway Community Hospital serves Stranraer and the west of the region; it is an intermediate unit providing maternity services, as well as medical & surgical beds. There are bedded units within eight cottage hospitals which provide care services such as minor injuries units. Midpark Hospital provides inpatient facilities for mental health patients.
Dumfries and Galloway is a beautiful and mostly undiscovered part of Scotland. This post would suit a doctor who enjoys walking, running, cycling, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. We are only a 90 minute drive away from the Lake District. We are close enough to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle for those who also appreciate the bright lights and city life.
Accommodation will be available.
