Applications are invited for the post of a Project Support Officer within the Blood Transfusion department at Dorset County Hospital.
This post is being recruited to on a fixed term basis for four months.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and well-motivated individual to support our well established team in the Blood Transfusion team with the implementation of a Blood Tracking solution (Haemonetics) in the Trust.
Experience in a variety of different disciplines would be beneficial, for example Blood Transfusion Practitioner, or Pathology, or IT, or administration.
This is an exciting time to join the Pathology team in Dorset. We are currently making great progress with our vision to create a first class integrated pathology service for Dorset.
The ‘One Dorset Pathology’ service for Dorset County Hospital, Poole Hospital and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals will provide clinicians, patients and carers with a consistent and high standard of service across the area and maximise efficiency in the use of resources.
The department holds current UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accreditation.
The post is full time, 37.5 hours per week for a period of 4 months.
To work alongside HCPC- and NMC-registered staff in HTL providing a timely, high quality, accurate and cost-effective implementation of the Haemonetics BloodTrack Electronic Blood Tracking System (eBTS) for Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (DCHFT).
To provide support and maintenance of the available systems for recording both final fate and traceability of blood components. This will include administration duties within the eBTS, where appropriate.
To build specialist knowledge of the eBTS systems, hardware (blood collection kiosks, Personal Digital Assistants - PDAs) and processes employed within the Trust and communicate this to staff accurately and effectively.
To perform training in concepts and systems related to the eBTS within both the Pathology laboratory, clinical areas and external customers (The Winterbourne Hospital).
To collect, extract and modify data for the production of statistical reports.
To assist with a range of clerical and administrative duties in support of the Transfusion Practitioner Team.
To help design training materials associated with the implementation, and ongoing maintenance, of the eBTS..
To supervise and train staff from a wide variety of clinical and non-clinical backgrounds throughout DCHFT (and its customers) in the use of the eBTS.

**The post holder will**:
- Work within their scope of practice and seek advice from appropriate staff as required. They are required to be flexible and work in all designated areas of the Trust dependant on service needs.
- Perform routine eBTS tasks in all areas of the Trust. This may be receiving requests for support (maintenance and training) within Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
- Be expected to undertake and perform more specialised tasks (such as eBTS hardware maintenance and operation). They must work according to the SOPs used within the laboratory.
- Undertake in-house training and be required to have understanding of Blood Transfusion Practice. They must maintain an up-to-date training record.
- Work with other members of staff to prioritise work and perform tasks, being required to use initiative and judgement regarding the prioritisation of such tasks.
- Develop the ability to troubleshoot and, where applicable, remedy equipment failures.
- Understand the importance of quality control and maintaining accurate documentation.
- Perform essential tasks using the eBTS, or other available alternatives, to confirm the traceability and final fate of blood components or products.
- Assist with the provision of support for users of the eBTS, being able to identify and respond to key training issues and themes from direct user support. This will include the ability to troubleshoot issues with regards to the blood tracking system, escalating as appropriate.
- Perform regular stock control duties of eBTS hardware and consumables.
- Undertake a training role within HTL for HTL staff and may be required to act as a mentor for newly appointed staff.
- Contribute to quality improvement activities including undertaking audit activities under supervision, implementing corrective and preventative actions, as directed.
