We are recruiting for an enthusiastic **Level 4 DevOps Apprentice** to work at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire. ICT is essential to the science that we support. We need keen individuals to help us in supporting and developing the IT systems required to keep STFC running.

You will be based in our HPC (High-Performance Computer) Data Centre Operations Group with IT professionals where your daily duties will be varied and complemented by formal training with Estio Training where over two years you will complete a Level 4 DevOps Apprenticeship. You will develop and expand your technical competencies required to work in the DevOps field whilst providing support and assistance to staff and users throughout Daresbury Laboratory.

The Digital Infrastructure Department delivers first-class IT support and services that underpin the STFC scientific programme of activities and partner organisations. We provide a comprehensive network and communications environment to support the science undertaken by STFC alongside other areas such as HPC Data Centre facilities; Service Desk, Applications, Infrastructure and Cyber Security. We support STFC’s projects in big data analytics, machine learning, AI and large computational modelling

**About the role**

**Main duties/responsibilities will include**:
The DevOps Apprentice will gain first-hand experience working as part of a professional team, supported by theoretical and practical learning. You will have the opportunity to make an impact early on in your role, where you’ll also learn the specialist skills tailored to the knowledge, skills and behaviours required as a computing professional.
- Developing software and automation to meet operational and user needs
- To perform proactive monitoring to ensure the health, performance and security of our production and non-production environments on-premises Data Centres
- Linux Open source software proficient. A few examples of technologies we work with daily: Nagios; Gitlab; Modbus/Sip/Babelbuster, Cacti, Elastic search, WeatherMap; Grafana, Linux, Python, and Raspberry Pi
- Working to resolve issues and deployments
- Working on maintenance and development of production environments
- Producing documentation

Alongside this, you will undertake professional development and training as part of a cohort of computing apprentices with Estio Training completing the Level 4 DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship. The modules you will complete, combined with real-world projects and experience, will provide you with the knowledge and skills to perform in a DevOps role.

Sessions will be delivered online once per month in 2 to 3 day blocks via a live Virtual Learning Environment and you will also be supported on a 1:1 basis throughout your apprenticeship by a dedicated Technical Coach. During the first 20 months of your apprenticeship, you will study:
