**About the role**:
The Safety, Health, Environment & Crime (SHEC) Team are passionate about safety and committed to setting and delivering excellence across Northern. We believe that a strong safety culture contributes to the success of the business. As the Health & Safety Business Partner, you’ll pay a pivotal part in shaping that culture and driving continuous improvement in safety standards and performance.

You’ll be the go-to expert for guidance and support, ensuring that directors, managers and local teams have the necessary tools and advice to maintain our high safety standards. You’ll foster a proactive safety culture within our operations function to achieve the business SHEC plans and objective.

In this role, you’ll be at the forefront of integrating best practices in occupational and operational health and safety, as well as risk management principles, into all activities across Northern. As well as proving coaching and supporting managers and leaders across the operational regions to enhance their safety awareness and ensure effective implementation of SHEC management system procedures.

**Key responsibilities**:
As the Health & Safety Business Partner, you can expect a role that is diverse and challenging. Here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:

- Lead the development of a proactive safety culture that aligns with our safety plans and objectives.
- Integrate the best practices of operational safety and occupational health into our day-to-day activities, driving continuous improvement.
- Identify and address hazards associated with our operations, ensuring the safety of our workforce and all those affected.
- Act as a central point of contact for projects and external best practices, sharing knowledge and expertise with the team.
- Provide coaching and support to managers and leaders, helping them enhance safety awareness and implement SHE management system procedures.
- Lead the implementation and monitoring of operational and traincrew standards.
- Act as a deputy for the Head of Operational Standards when needed, ensuring that our performance commitments are met.

We are also looking for the following:

- Managerial qualifications or significant experience within a management role of influence
- Previous experience in an operational safety role.
- A thorough knowledge and understanding of NTS and human factors
- Extensive knowledge of railway occupational and operational health and safety issues, legislation, standards, rules, and regulations, as well as best practices
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of safety management systems, such as HSG 65 Successful Health and Safety Management and ISO 45001.
- Extensive knowledge and experience of railway operations and people management is essential.
- Excellent working knowledge of software packages, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.

You must also hold, or be willing to work towards the following:

- NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
- Membership of a professional safety institution such as IOSH
- An accredited auditor course
- An accredited assessor qualification
