This is a substantive position as Consultant in Microbiology (10PAs) at Northamptonshire University Hospitals. The appointee will, together with other consultants in medical microbiology, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and cost-effective clinical microbiology, virology and infection prevention and control service to the Group hospitals at Northampton and Kettering. This post is based at Northampton. We want to recruit the best people to deliver our services across the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire and help to unleash everyone's full potential.

The appointee will, together with other consultants in medical microbiology, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and cost-effective clinical microbiology, virology and infection control service to the Trust, Group and other users of the service.

The agreed job plan comprises a total of 10 Programmed activities (PAs). This consists of 8.5 Direct Clinical Care PAs and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activity (SPAs). Further PA and SPA allocation can be allocated as a result of Job Plan review which will take place in 3 months and annually thereafter (maximum 12PAs). In the event of disputes arising from job planning where an agreement is not reach there is a mechanism of resolution and mediation in line with Schedule 4 of the Terms & Conditions - Consultants (England 2003).

**DCC**: Results validation, laboratory supervision, ward work, infection control work, handover meetings, telephone liaison, patient related administration, antimicrobial stewardship, service development, public health duties, surveillance, multidisciplinary meetings, administration directly relating to all above.

**SPA**: Core: Appraisal, revalidation work, medical education, audits, CPD, job planning, research, clinical management & training.
**Non-core**: Clinical lead

On Call Commitments
All consultants will participate. On call availability supplement agreed at present is Category A, 8%

Laboratory duties
The appointee will be expected to provide a comprehensive service, including authorisation and interpretation of results as well as day-to-day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens. There would also be expected to be involvement in policy and SOP preparation, responsibility for quality assurance performance within the department, including taking part in all relevant National External Quality Assurance (NEQAS) programmes and responsibility for achieving and maintaining full accreditation with UKAS (UK) Ltd. Business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods as well as forward planning for staff and equipment requirements may also be included in the role.

Clinical Duties
The appointee will be expected to provide a clinical advisory service with continuing responsibility for care of patients with infections in liaison with clinical consultant colleagues. The appointee will also be expected to provide clinical leadership on the development of strategy (diagnostic and clinical) across the Trust and to participate in construction of relevant policies for the Trust / Group as required. Provision of equivalent services from the Trust to other healthcare providers who have service level agreement (SLA) with the Trust will also be expected as required. Consultants are expected to do ICU ward rounds daily as well as multidisciplinary ward round as appropriate in haematology, oncology, C.diff, NNU etc. The post holder may be asked to participate in cross site work with Kettering.

Out of hours duties
The appointee will have out-of-hours responsibilities for emergency microbiology and infection control advice and cover of other microbiology consultant colleagues in Northampton when they are on leave, as part of rota arrangement.
