Are you passionate about training, educating and empowering families to care for their baby in preparation for discharge home?

Some of our families will require bedside support with competencies, to care for their babies at home, and additional social support from other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

The post holder will be working as part of the multidisciplinary team working who will demonstrate expertise within the neonatal service, providing advise, education and support to staff, parents/ careers in the neonatal unit.

City neonatal unit is a 29 bedded unit at a level 2. We have 5 ITU beds, 5 HDU and 19 Special Care. We cater for new-borns from 27 weeks and above.

Day to day relationships will be with staff on the neonatal unit, babies and their families; NCOT Team, members of the Community Health Visiting Team, Community Nursing Team, Safeguarding Unit, General Practitioners, Midwives, Consultants, other hospitals, other Liaison Health Visitors and other partners within the multi-agency network.

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

- To participate in neonatal consultant ward rounds in the neonatal unit; assessing, planning and evaluating treatment and care, and making recommendations for changes.
- To take a lead role in the discharge planning of babies from the unit, liaising with the shift lead, nursing and medical staffs, neonatal community outreach lead sister, ward manager and matron along with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- To teach and advise families in the skills needed for the care and management of their baby in hospital and home and support them.
- Support staff to promote an environment where parents are empowered and encouraged to care for their baby.
- Encourage and support staff to deliver effective family
- centered care that is responsive to the families specific needs and culture.
- To assist with breast feeding support.
- Participate in the monthly safeguarding meeting.
- Participate in child protection conferences and assist in the writing of reports.
- Participate in discharge planning meetings to evaluate and plan care for neonates and their families.
- To work in strict accordance to the organisations policies and procedures and Safeguarding Policy
- To assume responsibility for own professional conduct with regard to confidentiality, professional standards of care, quality of service, clinical updating and accurate record keeping, both manual and computerised.
- To develop a system for auditing workload and evaluating the liaison service and to communicate results to other staff in order to build up excellence and evidence based uniformity of practice.
- To be the named professional to receive and inform appropriate professionals of referrals received from other Hospitals locally and nationally.
- To maintain contemporaneous paper and electronic records as per NMC guidance and organisation Record keeping policy.
- To maintain own professional development and portfolio of work. To attend all statutory and mandatory training as directed by the organisation.
- To create an environment in which colleagues of all disciplines enjoy good working relationships and share new and relevant information.
- To provide and receive clinical supervision and facilitate reflective practice.
- To raise and escalate concerns in a timely manner and bring to the attention of the Service Lead any serious clinical and non clinical incidents and hazards that present a risk to members of the public, staff or the organisation.
- Manage, supervise and support the activities of clerical staff working in the team.
- To maintain the agreed clinical learning environment criteria, implement a supervisory system for all students and be actively involved in the teaching of all staff.
- Demonstrate good leadership and team building skills.
- To formulate and contribute to policies and practices which operate within the area of responsibility
- To undertake any other duties as appropriate to meet the needs of the service within the
