We have a team of staff based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital who will talk you through your role, make sure you are comfortable with your surroundings and will be on hand to answer any questions or concerns you may have while you are a volunteer.

The role of a Macmillan Area Helper is to complement the work of staff by supporting them in providing patients and visitors with a positive experience during their visit to the area.

**The role may include some or all of the following activities**:

- Meeting and greeting people as they enter the ward/department and offering a smile to everyone, promoting a relaxed atmosphere.
- Engaging with patients and their relatives in discussion and conversation
- Providing refreshments under the direction of staff lead to an individual only if this this falls within the boundaries of an interaction.
- Demonstrating respect and sensitivity to all individuals and ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all time.
- Referring the individual to the appropriate member of staff or service if further help is required, that is outside the remit or boundaries of the volunteer role.
- Engaging in any other appropriate activity under the direction/supervision of a member of Staff
- Participating in any relevant training and supervision meetings where appropriate.
- Providing information on local amenities such as toilets, restaurants, public transport and car parking areas.
- Assisting the Ward/Department in the collection of Patient Satisfaction Surveys.
- Keeping visitor areas neat and tidy.
- Assisting staff with the making up of information packs/replenishment of information leaflets
