**Pioneer a new future to meet global healthcare challenges**

We are committed to leading in sustainability. Backed by a belief in the connection between the health of our business, people and the planet. Be part of shaping a better future for all, supporting healthy communities by addressing the global societal and economic burden of disease. Help to limit our environmental impact by supporting our ambitious sustainability goals. From reducing our operational carbon footprint and waste generation, to driving efficient energy and water usage. And we do it all with ethics and transparency - doing the right thing in all our operations and interactions.

**Chemical Development**

Chemical Development is responsible for the design of the chemical manufacturing processes that deliver Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for our late clinical and commercial medicines. AstraZeneca has set an inspiring target to achieve net zero-carbon by 2030. However, the company's commitment to the environment faces a formidable challenge as the manufacturing of APIs currently contributes to its carbon footprint. To overcome this challenge we must embrace innovative and transformative technologies that enable the sustainable manufacture of APIs.

We currently have a role available for a Postdoctoral Associate specialising in the integration of photochemistry into the API manufacturing process.

In this role you will work within Chemical Development to drive excellence in the design of new reactions that change the way we manufacture APIs. The holder will practically drive the discovery, optimisation and scale-up of photochemical reactions. Time will be spent working with a cross disciplinary group that includes project, specialist, and engineering teams.

As part of this exciting opportunity you will have the chance to work at the forefront of the pharmaceutical industry and tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing modern process chemistry. Not only will you gain invaluable insights into how the industry operates, but you will also be provided with the necessary resources and skills to make a real impact with your work.

With your expertise and dedication, you can help shape the future of pharmaceutical manufacture and make a positive impact on the lives of people around the world.

**Responsibilities of the role**:

- Develop novel reactions using photochemistry to support the process development of APIs
- Enhance synthetic capability in AstraZeneca by embedding the use of photochemical methodologies into Chemical Development
- Design and practical demonstration of synthetic routes that are suitable for large scale manufacture of APIs
- Drive synthetic excellence and collaboration across project and specialist teams

**Essential Requirements**:

- Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry and will hold, or be completing, a PhD/DPhil with a significant synthetic chemistry focus
- Experience in synthetic route or reaction development, breath of knowledge in organic chemistry and a track record of innovation from ideation to practical demonstration
- Practical lab skills including analytical techniques to support synthesis design
- Ability to use literature research e.g. databases such as SciFinder, Reaxys
- High motivation and passion for chemistry and the pharmaceutical industry
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Demonstrate a high level of teamwork capabilities
- Strong technical and non-technical problem-solving skills

**Desirable Experience**:

- Awareness of the considerations in the design of synthetic routes for large scale manufacture of APIs
- Previous industrial experience and technology-driven synthesis such as flow chemistry, design of experiment (DoE), computational chemistry
- High scientific reputation as evidenced by publications and external presentations

At AstraZeneca, we are dedicated to being a Great Place to Work. Where you are empowered to push the boundaries of science and unleash your entrepreneurial spirit.
