**About the role**:
As an Assistant Product Purchaser here at Matalan you will support the purchaser working directly with the supply base on the procurement of products that meet Matalan's requirements. Working hand in hand with the Product Development team to support in the sourcing and procurement of items that deliver our product strategy, optimizing the best costs and maintaining quality standards. Your role is integral to ensuring that we also deliver the products on time, working in close collaboration with the purchasing merchandise team and the supply base to manage the approval process and critical path.

**Product Sourcing and Supplier Management**
- Support the product purchaser in the identification and sourcing of potential suppliers, through market research, trade shows and via our supplier inbox
- Manage the sourcing supply base in collaboration with key stakeholders, aligned with the company’s goals and objectives
- Evaluate supplier capabilities, including quality, pricing, reliability and payment / delivery terms
- Negotiate pricing with suppliers to secure the most favourable terms for Matalan
- Build and maintain strong and trusting relationships with suppliers, addressing any issues and collaborating to highlight / mitigate any risk

**Purchase Planning**
- Collaborate with Merch Planning and the product purchaser to ensure effective capacity planning, allowing Matalan to maximise manufacturing efficiencies.

**Supplier Performance Management**
- Support the Purchaser in resolving any issues or disputes with suppliers regarding quality, delivery, or other aspects of the purchasing process
- Collaborate with suppliers to improve quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness
- Work with the product development team to ensure product specification packs are accurate and suppliers meet the requirements accordingly

**Cost Analysis and Negotiation**
- Understand market trends, pricing data, and economic factors to undertake negotiations
- Utilise in depth costing knowledge to negotiate costs with suppliers, to achieve savings and maximise profitability
- Identify consolidation opportunities to improve efficiency both internally and externally within the supply base
- Take responsibility for the tender process on key volume lines.

**Production Management**
- Responsible for the approval process within the critical path owning the day to day detail, ensuring all trigger dates are met - escalating accordingly where necessary to ensure the timely delivery of finished products.
- Responsible for product approvals in collaboration with the key stakeholders ie technologist / Fabric
- Support the merchandise team and purchaser in intake management and trading actions, within the supply base

**Documentation and Reporting**
- Maintain accurate and updated records on purchasing activities and supplier information
- Generate reports on purchasing activities, cost savings, and supplier performance
- Provide regular updates and analysis to the Product Purchaser regarding costs / purchasing / supplier/opportunities through benchmarking

**People**
- Act as a role model, demonstrating the Matalan values at all times

**About You**:

- Strong negotiation and communication skills
- Understanding of Supply Chain Management - including raw material and production trends
- Excellent attention to detail, with exceptional organizational and problem solving skills
- Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Proven experience in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain preferably within Retail
- Understanding of Sourcing strategies, supplier management and purchasing best practice
- Analytical thinking with the ability to provide data analysis in a clear and concise manner
- Ability to multi-task and work to tight deadlines
