**Summary of job purpose**

This is a role primarily in environmental protection and community safety; however, you will develop agile generalist EHO skills in the Planning, Housing and Health Service across the stunning area of North Devon including building a portfolio of competency in food safety, health & safety, infectious disease control, private water supplies, licensing, emergency planning, planning enforcement, private sector housing, housing adaptations & energy efficiency, disabled facility grants, empty homes, houses in multiple occupation.

The successful Apprentices will be based at Brynsworthy Environment Centre, Barnstaple. You will have one day each week dedicated to studying towards your degree at Weston College, with the remaining four days working in the Council’s busy Environmental Health and Housing team.

As you learn and develop your skills and knowledge, you will help respond to complaints and enquiries, support officers on inspections and investigations; liaise with members of the public, colleagues and external agencies and assist with proactive compliance work and projects. As you progress through the apprenticeship, you will start to manage your own caseload within your team, while gaining experience with other individuals and teams in the wider service.

This post involves flexible working, however there is a requirement to regularly work in the office and attend team meetings. There will also be some planned out of hours work on occasion.

The Environmental Health Apprenticeship runs over four years. Upon successful completion you will have gained a breadth of environmental health experience and a degree, which is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
