This is a new Consultant in Neurophysiology post for University Hospitals Sussex NHS FT, working with 2 other substantive colleagues to lead the service for patients in Sussex and beyond. The postholder will work in the new and state of the art Louise Martindale Building at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, alongside other neuroscience specialties, with all the opportunities this will bring

The Neurophysiology Unit provides services for the population across the whole of Sussex and parts of Kent and Surrey operating primarily from the RSCH site. The service operates outreach services in Shoreham-by-Sea (Southlands Hospital, specifically EEG and EMG/NCS services) and in Chichester (St Richards Hospital, specifically EMG/NCS services). The service has strong links with the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton.

The Neurophysiology Unit provides a wide range of Neurophysiological investigations, including Electromyography, Nerve Conduction studies, Single Fibre EMG, Electroencephalography Adult and Paediatric, mobile EEG service covering Intensive Care Units, Sleep Studies including Multiple Sleep Latency tests, Ambulatory EEG monitoring, Video Telemetry, Multimodality Evoked Potentials, Electroretinography and Electro oculography.

In 2021 approximately 7,000 investigations were carried out. Growth in demand is approaching 5% per annum. The MINDEXii patient management system is used for management of all patient activity and reporting.

There is a dedicated bed with fixed Telemetry at RSCH.

**The clinical duties of the post include the following**:

There is no on-call commitment at present. This may however change in the future.

CLINICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

There will be three substantive consultant posts in Neurophysiology as a result of this appointment. The principal responsibility of these posts is to provide regional Neurophysiology services, primarily to the population covered by NHS Sussex. This includes provision of a comprehensive elective and emergency service covering complex and simple EMG and reporting of EEG, evoked potentials and nerve conduction studies. The post-holders will maintain continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and the proper functioning of the Neurophysiology Unit.

The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
