We are looking for a qualified Clinical Endoscopist to join our team at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust in deliveringhigh qualitydiagnostic & therapeuticupper and lower endoscopy.

The Trust has a purpose-built endoscopy unit with the latest high-definition endoscopes. There are 10 consultant gastroenterologists at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust and 4 clinical endoscopists who work in conjunction with our surgical colleagues to deliver high quality diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy. The unit is JAG accredited and Bolton is a bowel cancer screening centre.

We are looking for a clinical endoscopist with a V300 non-medical prescribing qualification (from a nursing or other healthcare background) who is a registered health professional and a qualified, JAG accredited endoscopist. The applicant should have substantial post registration experience and be able to demonstrate key performance indicators for upper and lower endoscopy in line with British Society of Gastroenterology standards.

Teaching and supervision of trainee endoscopists is an important part of the role.

Clinical endoscopists are expected to engage in clinical audit, service development and have a role in governance.

The service operates a flexi-time working arrangement and recognises the importance of balancing the needs of work with family commitments.

The post holder will carry out both upper and lower endoscopy, make diagnoses, take biopsies and perform polypectomy. They will document their findings using the endoscopic reporting system with both written reports and photographic evidence. Recommendations will be made based on the findings and if relevant, advice given to GP referrers. Comprehensive knowledge of the relevant guidelines will be used to arrange follow-up endoscopy and further investigations.

Endoscopic and histological findings will be communicated to patients both verbally and through correspondence and the post holder will also be expected to communicate bad news to patients in a sympathetic and professional manner when there is suspicion of cancer.

Currently each clinical endoscopist has a single weekly telephone clinic for GP lower GI referrals on the two week pathway. The team also validates all primary care upper GI endoscopy referrals and internal outpatient referrals to ensure safe and appropriate, guideline driven, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
