There are about 3000 general paediatric admissions per year, mainly to the 15 bed acute paediatric medical ward (Toni and Guy Ward), and the 6 bedded short stay unit which is located near the Emergency Department. There are 18 paediatric SHO level trainees (5 GPVTS trainees, 7 Paediatric trainees and 6 clinical fellows) who cover General Paediatrics, the Paediatric Emergency Department (ED), Neurosurgical ward, Paediatric Surgery and the Medical Day Case Unit (Phillip Isaacs). Middle grade support is based on the wards (and in the Emergency Department overnight). A strong Paediatric Nurse Practitioner team, CAMHS liaison team and Safeguarding team support this workload.

Inpatient services at Variety Children’s Hospital at King’s are based on 8 wards with over 120 beds, including:

- An award winning 6 bedded paediatric short stay unit
- A 16 bedded paediatric intensive care unit specialising in liver and neurosurgery, as well as major trauma and general paediatric admissions
- A 36 bedded regional Neonatal intensive care unit, accepting local, national and specialist surgical patients
- A 18 bedded Liver, gastroenterology and nutrition ward
- A 15 bedded general paediatric ward which includes a level 2 Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU), paediatric haematology, respiratory and regional cystic fibrosis beds
- A 9 bedded medical day case unit
- A 11 bedded surgical ward
- A 10 bedded neurosurgical/neurology ward

**Clinical**: All aspects of documentation and care of medical and surgical paediatric inpatients including private patients. Attendance in Paediatric Accident and Emergency, management of patients in the Neurosurgical ward

**Teaching**: Assistance in conjunction with consultants, lectures and specialist registrars with the teaching of undergraduates.

**Research**: Involvement in the research interests of the department will be encouraged.

Objectives

**The objectives of the post include the development of**:

- understanding of the assessment and management of common disease in children
- competence in the practical procedures required in ill children
- competence in the management of fluid and nutritional support for ill children
- experience in dealing with the relatives of children with acute illness
- the undertaking of a single audit/Quality Improvement project during the course of the post

Educational activities specifically for SHO/ST1-3 level. They are mandatory as built into the timetable.

i) Weekly case presentation and discussion Tuesday 8:30

ii) Weekly Paediatric teaching on Wednesday at 08.15.

iii) Weekly PICU teaching on Thursday at 08.15

The following activities have a high educational content, and attending them would be worthwhile:

- The weekly Paediatric Radiology meeting, on Wednesdays at 11.30in the Seminar Room of the Radiology Department, the Paediatric Neuroscience Radiology meeting, on Wednesdays at 14.00 in the Neuro-radiology reporting room and on Microsoft Teams
- A weekly Paediatric Grand Round. Wednesdays at 1pm in Alex Mowat Seminar Room (with integrated safeguarding teaching 1-1.30) and on Microsoft Teams
- A weekly respiratory meeting takes place on Thursdays at 1 pm on Microsoft Teams
- The weekly Hospital Grand Round on Thursdays at 13.00 in the Gainsford Lecture Theatre (in the Weston Education Centre) or on Microsoft Teams
- There is a monthly Paediatric Grand Round at 8 am on Microsoft Team
