The Community Library Officer is accountable for guaranteeing the everyday operation of the library service at the branch level, ensuring a high-quality service is provided. Additionally, the officer must ensure that the building and equipment are in good working condition. They will also support the Community Library Manager in coordinating and utilising the available space.

The postholder will actively participate in the execution of Camden's community and digital library development. This includes assisting in the development and implementation of a local community library business plan in collaboration with residents and partners. They will also develop and oversee volunteers to deliver community projects and digital offerings in the library to meet community needs. These projects may include coding clubs, gadget drop-ins, games clubs, homework clubs, and more. The officer will also support other library staff in activities as necessary. They will work with children and families, including baby bounce, under 5s, and reading activities with children of all ages. The officer will build and maintain partnerships with local voluntary and community groups, businesses, schools and colleges, tenants and residents’ associations to ensure ongoing co-design of library services. They will also organize and deliver outreach activities to promote the library beyond its current user base, such as providing reader development workshops with schools, youth clubs, and community groups in community settings outside the library building.

The person in this role will assist members of the public in initiating and participating in community and social projects and activities within the library. They will collaborate with colleagues from various departments, such as Arts Development and Events, to organize cultural events in the library. The individual will work with the Library Manager and Communications team to promote and market these activities and events using a range of communication tools, including printed and digital posters, web publishing, and social media promotion.

Additionally, the postholder will assist library users in using self-service technology, such as kiosks, public computers, printers, and scanners, and coordinate activities to reduce digital exclusion. This may involve working with partners and volunteers to run support sessions for people who need help accessing online resources, such as Universal Credit or disabled parking.

They will also be responsible for managing cash, book displays, equipment checks, and reporting faults. The individual will ensure that the library service is accessible to all, including children, young people, older people, people with disabilities, and black and ethnic minority groups. They will participate in cross-library service projects to review and develop the service.

The individual responsible for this role will ensure a safe working environment for employees, volunteers, and the general public by adhering to safeguarding procedures and conducting risk assessments for events and activities. They will also ensure compliance with data protection laws such as the Data Protection Act and GDPR, as well as other relevant legislation. In addition, they will provide excellent customer service by responding to daily inquiries and complaints and assisting individuals in accessing information and services, including directing them to other resources such as job seeking, health, and advice.

The postholder may also provide operational coverage for other libraries, including working at different locations, and support other areas of the library service such as archives, bibliographic services, and online resources as needed.
