Your new role

National Highways are recruiting for a Regional Safety Programme Manager on a permanent basis to work from either our Wakefield or Darlington office. The role will identify and lead on a regional programme of safety improvements and initiatives to embedthe Safe System Approach in our region. You will play an active role in incident and casualty reduction for the region, working closely with stakeholders both internally and externally.

You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employment.

What you’ll be leading on

Preparation and implementation of our Regional Road User Safety Plan to deliver improvements to safety across the region
Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including road safety partnerships and emergency services, to ensure full mutual understanding of the Safe System Approach and the Road User Safety Plan objectivesand to identify measures to contribute to reductions in the numbers killed or seriously injured on the network
Lead on identifying good practice and initiatives in road safety, ways of improving compliance and performance monitoring. Lead on supporting their promotion within the region and, if appropriate, more widely
Work closely with other parts of Highways England, breaking down existing silos and promoting consistent safety activity in alignment with the safety strategy - including supporting the regional Asset Development Manager in spreading good practice across thenetwork of Regional Safety Programme Managers and the Asset Development Teams
Act as the regional lead and focal point to deliver strategies and processes identified by our Safer Roads Team
Demonstrate firm commitment to the success of Road Safety Partnerships, promoting their establishment where none exist and ensuring that agreements and governance is in place to allow Highways England to work with and deliver activities via those partnerships
Act as a focal point for the region in communicating road safety messages to the media and public in general in liaison with the Press Office, representing the region at road safety working group meetings and acting as spokesperson for the region on road safety
To be successful

Demonstrate a good understanding of road safety issues and their causes along with a proven track record of developing programmes of interventions to address these
Evidence of leading on the implementation of safety standards across an organisation
Work collaboratively with stakeholders and partners to deliver shared outcomes
Confidently deliver key messages to audiences including colleagues, partners, public and media
Experience writing reports including presentation and analysis of data to identify key trends and areas for intervention
Demonstrable experience of managing projects
