We are currently recruiting for a General Manager for our Belper site.
The head count for Belper is 171, we are looking for someone who is either looking to make that move into a General Manager role or someone from an FMCG background looking to join DS Smith.
About the role
Responsibility for the safe and efficient operations of a standard integrated box plant, following industry and DS Smith standards to deliver required customer service levels.
A core part of the role will be to promote cross-site and cross-function collaboration to achieve exceptional performance across the business.
Key responsibilities of the role are:

Participation in Supply Chain optimisation activity within the cluster
Ensure implementation of all applicable DS Smith Standards
Ambassador and senior representative of DS Smith within the local community
Takes general legal responsibility for the site based on local regulatory requirements
Health and Safety
- Drive a culture of safe working practice across the site to ensure full compliance with operating obligations (E.g Legal / HSE policies & regulations)
- Assure achievement of critical KPIs
- Support the functional and local HSER leads in driving improvement in the organisation
- Continuous messaging and role modelling “Everyone’s responsibility for safety”
- Develop and execute necessary environmental and sustainability policies with the relevant functional support
Operational efficiency & Maintenance
- Drive overall contribution of the site to the cluster P&L through optimising costs and productivity
- Ensure implementation of DS Smith Standards
- Oversee the execution of appropriate Preventive, Predictive and Corrective maintenance procedures and cost management
- Install daily weekly governance to monitor and drive KPIs in Quality, Productivity, Waste, Machine availability etc
- Set and drive targets for continuous improvement (CI)
- Create the working environment to engage workforce in driving CI
- Collaborate relevant departments to ensure policies to minimise working capital are in place
Employee Engagement and working culture
- Promote a healthy working environment both within operations and the wider functions and teams on site
- Responsible for a high and improving employee engagement score
- Promote DS Smiths Purpose message
- Work closely with HR business partners to support the above
Adoption and compliance with internal and external standards
- Ensure applicable standards are clearly owned audited and reinforced through the relevant departments and managers
- Drive adoption and compliance with divisional machine SOPs and policies
- Adapt procedures to be relevant to local equipment where necessary
- Support relevant functional teams in identification of new best practices and opportunities to improve standard operating procedures
Continuous improvement
- Drive overall contribution of the site to the cluster P&L through optimising costs and productivity
- Install daily weekly governance to monitor and drive KPIs in productivity, Waste, Machine availability etc
- Set and drive targets to continuously improve
- Create the working environment to engage workforce in driving ‘CI’
- Collaborate relevant departments to ensure policies to minimise working capital are in place
Participation in Supply Chain optimisation activity within the cluster
- Participate in regular S&OP meetings and support cluster level strategic decisions under direction of Cluster Director
- Drive for maximise machine utilisation to support site productivity
- Ensure the site provides accurate capacity data in a timely manner to the S&OP process
- Drive collaborative behaviours (problem solving not blaming) and encourage cross-site/cross function and improvement
About you
Qualities/Attributes
- Degree Qualified. Likely from an engineering or technical discipline with elements of business or commercial study
Desirable profile
- Strong general management skills and maturity to be the recognised leader of large workforce (>150 FTE) of both direct employees and co-located departments
- A strong technical career background and experience managing shop floor manufacturing operations, quality standards and asset maintenance
- External outlook -Ability to interpret and work with the wider strategic agenda, within the division and Cluster
- Maturity to recognise and operate comfortably within a matrix environment and sometimes competing priorities while remaining focused on core KPIs
Technical
- Technical competence in Machine Operations, production planning, maintenance Quality, Logistics and Continuous Improvement in an FMCG or similar production environment
- Ability to interpret KPI trends, initiate and support any necessary analysis to determine improvement opportunities and drive performance
