AA will work as part of a large department to supply anaesthesia and sedation to a wide variety of complex patients in the New Royal, Broadgreen and Dental hospital. They will join 3 other fully qualified AAs and 2 trainee AAs. The Job Description outlines the role of a qualified Anaesthesia Associate (AA).

These would be expected to be the minimum level of competency of a qualified AA.

To work as a member of the anaesthetic team.

To work competently under appropriate supervision.

Pre-operative assessment of patients.

Preparation of environment for anaesthesia.

Implementation of anaesthetic care plan under appropriate supervision.

Insertion of peripheral cannula.

Induction and reversal of anaesthesia under the supervision of an anaesthetist.

Maintenance of anaesthesia.

Positioning of patients.

Administration of medicines/fluids.

Postoperative assessment.

Documentation of care.

Those with additional experience and skills, may carry out additional roles as appropriate. At all times the AA is expected to work within their level of competency and supervision appropriate to that level.

Work as an autonomous practitioner undertaking diagnostic and therapeuticinvestigations for patients requiring sedation.

Pre-operative assessment as required.

To ensure the operating lists run efficiently and effectively.

To act as an excellent role model and develop own clinical expertise keeping abreast of
changing developments in the field of anaesthesia.

To carry out line peripheral, arterial and central line insertion.

Induction and reversal of anaesthesia under the direct supervision of a qualified
anaesthetist.

Maintenance of anaesthesia.

Postoperative assessment.

To participate in the formulation and development of clinical governance action plans.

To develop mechanisms to monitor user’s perceptions of the service.

To provide appropriate guidance regarding wellness, lifestyle, disease, risks and
potential changes in health status, including health awareness, screening and
prevention.

To recognise and refer to appropriate primary care services for clients with
acute/chronic conditions.

To document all relevant information regarding the client according to Trust standards.

Where agreed, to dispense medication to the client using agreed protocols.

Where appropriate, to select, perform and interpret screening and diagnostic laboratory
tests, as agreed in protocols.

To evaluate results of intervention using accepted outcome criteria, revise the plan of
care, where appropriate, and consult/refer when needed.

To undertake Non-medical prescribing following successful completion of the V300
