DUTIES

The range of duties considered appropriate for Nursing Auxiliaries is set out below. The word 'assist' is used to denote that after appropriate instruction the Nursing Auxiliary can assist qualified or student nurses in the delivery of patient care. She may assist with duties other than those outlined below, and carry out unaided some duties at the discretion of a qualified member of nursing staff:
- Assist with the admission and discharge of patients - appropriate duties may include listing of clothing and assistance with dressing and undressing.
- Weigh patients and chart weight.
- Assist with making occupied and unoccupied beds.
- Help patients to prepare for meals and assist in the service of meals. Serve refreshments and simple diets where appropriate.
- Help with the feeding of patients in all age groups including handicapped persons.
- Assist with bathing in bed and in the bathroom, with the moving and handling of patients, including the use of mechanical aids and bed appliances.
- Help patients with personal hygiene, including care of hair, teeth and nails as required.
- Assist in the care of pressure areas and the care of the incontinent patient. Undressing, taking to toilet and using sani-chairs and commodes.
- Participate in giving and/or removing toilet utensil
- Assist with keeping of routine records, eg weight charts and fluid balance charts.
- Assist with movement of patients to other wards, clinics, departments or hospitals, and undertake chaperon and escort duties.
- Help patients with the care of their personal belongings.
- Report to the person in charge all observations made of the patient.
- Assist in dealing with the deceased.
- Under the guidance of the Nurse in Charge undertake some clerical duties in the absence of the Ward Aide.
