This post is offered initially for one year fixed term and suited to individuals who are considering a career in Gastroenterology in the UK. Applicants will have completed core medical training or the equivalent, have full MRCP (UK), be registered with the GMC and have experience working within the NHS. Extensive Gastroenterology experience is not a requirement.

The successful applicant will alternate between blocks of inpatient and out-patient duties.

Main duties of the job

During inpatient blocks, the primary focus will be the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality care for patients admitted under Gastroenterology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. In addition to supporting the daily Consultant or senior trainee-led ward round, the applicant will provide ongoing review of patients during the working day to allow constant evaluation of care, with the support of our junior doctor ward team. The Trust Grade will also support the on-call Gastroenterology team, reviewing new admissions in receiving areas prior to their arrival on the ward and providing emergency out-patient reviews.

The post holder will contribute to the ST4+ General Internal Medicine rota at NUH which is cross-campus.

Each successful applicant will be allocated a clinical supervisor, whose role will be to support the development of a personal learning plan with SMART objectives to be completed within the year. The time table of out-patient blocks will be confirmed with the clinical supervisor dependent upon the competencies of the individual.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is designed to deliver the following roles:

- To build upon postgraduate clinical experience
- To develop further expertise in the identification and management of the sick patient
- To gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission, the development of strategies which might provide an alternative to admission and identifying where early discharge would be safe and appropriate
- To further develop skills of history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing
- To master a number of procedural techniques
- To hone communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues
- To develop skills in managing time and conflicting priorities.
- To increasingly work towards independent practice at Registrar level, leading ward rounds, assessing patients, making decisions etc. with Consultant support and supervision available at all times
- Provide in-hours middle grade support to inpatient Gastroenterology
- Deliver supervised out-patient Gastroenterology activity

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- GMC registration with license to practice in the UK
- Completion of Core Medical Training or equivalent
- Full MRCP (UK)
- Full ALS
- IELTS core minimum 7.5 with no individual area under 7.5 or minimum Grade B in all four subtests of the Occupational English Test

Experience

Essential criteria
- Experience working in the NHS of 12 months or more
- Experience of working in a large acute hospital setting
- Experience of working out of hours with limited support
- Supervision of juniors

Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching and training
- Experience of clinical Gastroenterology inpatient and outpatient

**Salary**: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
