**Job Title: Caretaker / Handyman / woman**

**Job Purpose**
- To provide a safe environment for all users of the School Buildings and Grounds
- To carry out caretaking and a wide range of site maintenance duties

**Key Responsibilities**
- **Daily opening of the School and related site security duties no later than 0715 Monday-Friday during term-time and by 0845 Monday-Friday during School holiday periods. The School is closed on ALL public holidays**
- Maintain professional keyholding arrangements
- Test fire alarms weekly and maintain test register
- To undertake basic maintenance of heating, lighting, plumbing and security systems to ensure they operate safely and efficiently
- Ensure efficient use of energy within the School through setting of heating systems controls
- To ensure that all allocated equipment, furniture and materials are stored safely and securely to prevent unauthorised access and potential accidents/misuse
- To perform duties in line with health and safety requirements and take remedial action where hazards are identified
- To report serious hazards to the Finance Manager and Principal immediately
- To help to maintain the School grounds to ensure they are fit for purpose
- To perform any other duties as may from time to time be required by the Finance Manager or Principal
- To maintain confidentiality
- To participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.=

**Maintenance of Building and Equipment**
- Conduct routine procedures and inspection of ancillary equipment e.g. pumps, boilers, batteries, windows, blinds etc.
- Weekly check of minibuses and organisation of repairs as necessary. Annual MOT, Road Tax and servicing
- Replacement of light bulbs and tubes
- Ensure that caretaking (and where applicable, cleaning) equipment is safe and in proper working condition
- Conduct first line repairs which are not beyond the scope of an experienced handyperson
- Ensure that all drains and gullies are free-flowing and clean. Cleaning blockages if possible should these occur
- Clean roller shutters, soffits, bargeboards and external lights
- Keep all hard surfaces free of moss and weeds
- Disinfect drains and dustbins regularly
- Make safe any hazards and ensure that the area is cordoned off
- Draw the attention of the Finance Manager and Principal to any repairs or maintenance work which is beyond the competence and responsibility of the caretaking staff and maintain the associated paperwork
- Direct workers and contractors to the sites of repair and maintenance work and inspect the work of contractors where there is a requirement to sign a completion/satisfaction note

**Outside Duties**
- Ensure that all hard areas and paths are free from litter and excessive accumulation of dirt or rubbish
- Empty playground bins during the School day if necessary
- Disposal of all rubbish. Cleaning dustbin areas
- Emergency, weather-related task e.g. keep paths, entrances free of ice and snow to ensure the safety of students, parents, staff and visitors
- Grass-cutting (there are small, limited grass areas within the School)
- Driving duties if required

**General Duties**
- Reception and distribution of deliveries within normal working hours
- Upkeep and general care of the school including response to spillages, breakages, graffiti etc.
- Cleaning of external windows at ground level
- Pick up litter as necessary
- General maintenance and minor repair work including doors, windows, toilet seats and flushes, furniture, tap washers etc.
- Appropriate painting and redecoration
- Joinery work including construction of furniture and construction of stage for Schools Shows/Productions
- Buffing of School Hall floor if necessary during the School Day
- General porterage duties and moving of furniture for example laying out and stacking of chairs, desks, tables etc.
- Preparing for School and After-School activities, including community use, tidying up after these activities, within the normal working day/week
- Assisting teaching staff with simple tasks if requested
- Preparation of Hall for functions as required
- Replenishment of staff and pupil toilet “supplies”/consumables as required during the day before cleaning staff arrive
- Ensure that all refuse is disposed of promptly and stored away from the main building
- Routinely clean lamp shades and light diffusers (strip lights). The height limit is eleven feet
- Ensure that clear passage is maintained on fire escape routes
- Conduct periodic cleaning of all internal surfaces to a height of eleven feet from floor level
- Report any defects of building, furniture, fittings and equipment to the Finance Manager
